LONG JB3 recordings?
« on: February 18, 2004, 06:59:32 PM »
Taping the Drive-By Truckers and I hear they are playing for 3+ hours.

Do I need to do anything special to record such a long show? Isn't there a 2 hour time limit to a wav file?

I've got both batteries fully charged. Hopefully that's enough power too.

Thanks,
MIKE B

Well the batteries should be more than plenty.  I taped for over 2 hours the other night and only have one battery.  And there were still two bars left showing at the end.

Not sure about the other question.  But inbetween songs you could always stop the recording and start a new one.

I thought the njb3 has a 3GB limit.  Roughly=300 mins i think.

just press the froward button between songs...it will start a new recording.

the truckers usually have a bit of banter between songs, so you should have plenty of time ;D

edit--be sure to try this at home first, one of the beauties of the jb3

There is a three-hour limit for WAV’s. If you press the fast forward button it will start a new track, if you have the latest firmware (1.40?) it is “seamless” if you have an older version you lose about 8 sec or so. Two batteries should go about 4 1/2 hrs I believe.

'seemless' is not exactly that.  there is still loss of data, so make sure to press FF when there is a bit on silence.  think of it this way, how long did a DAT switch use to take, now the time is dramtically reduced.

Thats why I put it in quotes. I hit by accident during a song, and you can hear it's not totally seamless. Just hit it inbetween songs and your golden! 8)

I did some testing last night getting ready for particle tonight and it looses roughly half a second, which is way better than 8.  "official" reports from njb3tapers says 10-30 frames are lost.

Wait a minute, did you mean 3 hours straight up, no setbreak? If so, wow.

if thats the case, id update your firmware to 1.40.06 so you can just set it on continuous, and at the 3 hr mark, it will start a new track ;)

so far the new firmware is werking real nice ;)

From what I've read here and on the NJB3Tapers group, it is NOT seamless - there's a brief break between the waves, ~30 samples or some such.  This *will* be audible.  Running continuous would potentially put your break in the middle of a song at the 3hr mark.  Better to do it manually so you can start a new file between songs and not miss any of the music.  Still beats flipping DATs!

i thought the continuous function yielded a "seamless" copy???

either way, ill prolly never use it anyway

fwiw, the Truckers don't play 3+ hours straight. 1 hr for 1st set, and 2+ hrs for the second + encores ... their encores usually consist of several tunes (3+)

The other night they played for about 2 hours + a 55 minute encore. So not exactly 3 hours straight. Encore break was a minute or 2. Plenty of time to switch tapes etc.

It was all I could take though, if it had gone any longer I might have gone mad. Too much good music.
