Firmware Downgrade
« on: February 26, 2004, 06:37:06 PM »
Ok, so I have done some advanced searching and I figured I ask the group.  When I try to upgrade to firmware 1.20.06, the installer program reports that I cannot downgrade from 1.32.01.

I was hoping that upgrading to 1.20.06 would solve the fact that I cannot get the firewire to function (4pin>4pin), but I got hung up unexpectedly.

Has anyone been able to clear the machine and start again from early firmware?  If it is as easy as reset, I am going to feel stooopid, but may as well ask.

Thanks!

Duh, I didn't read your whole post.

FWIW, I doubt it's the firmware that's preventing your firewire connectivity.  More likely the JB3 drivers on your PC.  Have you installed/upgraded your JB3 driver?  You can find the latest upgrade over at nomadness.net.

Ok, I tried to downgrade and I wasn't able to.. :'(

Not a big deal for now.  I did manage to upgrade to the most recent firmware and I need to do some reading on whether or not this is going to cause field troubles.  I am going to try the firewire today, now that the newest firmware has been upgraded.

Thanks.

Thanks bean for that note/comment.  I only have one 4pin firewire cable, on the entire machine.  I guess transferring a show in 20-30 mins is better than the old days when it was REAL-TIME only.

I wonder if the 4pin > 4pin that I have is bad or if you need to use Creative's cable.  Suspected proprietary cable??????

when you say all the drivers, you are talking about the other hardware drivers, right (specifically for the 1394 ports?)  lemme know, thanks!

when you say all the drivers, you are talking about the other hardware drivers, right (specifically for the 1394 ports?)  lemme know, thanks!

You need several pieces of software in place for the NJB3 to be fully functional:
[1] NJB3 firmware for the NJB3 to function
[2] PC drivers to enable firewire
[3] PC drivers to provide connectivity between Windows and NJB3
[4] File Manager software to provide a view/edit interface to the NJB3
Windows ought to have your firewire (1394) drivers already installed and running.

Sounds like you've taken care of [1].  Windows should have taken care of [2] already.  So now you need [3] and [4].

[3] There's a separate set of NJB3 drivers which must be installed on the PC in order for Windows to recognize the NJB3 over the firewire port/cable.  These drivers should have come on a CD with your NJB3.  Nomadness also hosts the driver upgrades.

[4] In addition to the drivers above which provide connectivity between Windows and the NJB3, you'll need another set of software to provide an interface that allows you as a user to view and edit the contents of the NJB3.  There are two options:  Creative's File Manager software or Redchair Software's Notmad Explorer.  FWIW, I recommend Notmad Explorer, it's a far better piece of s/w, IMO.  Check out the trial, and if you like it - buy it.  It's only $20.

Make sure you have:

1 - Latest Firmware installed on JB3.

2 - Lastest DRIVER FOR JB3 installed on PC.

3 - Latest VERSION OF CREATIVE MEDIASOURCE installed on PC.

There was an "issue" with Windows 2000/Firewire/JB3 drivers, that required an update to Windows.  I experienced this issue, when upgrading my firmware.  Look on Creatives Site for Solution ID # 8763.

Hope this helps...

Rick,   THANKS FOR THE SUGGESTION!
I am pretty sure that you have identified the problem, but now I cannot get to Creative's Problem Solving Area (such a big site).

Do you have the general link to that area of their site?
