Topic: Compaq IPAC pocket pc for taping?

Hi all,

I have never seen one of these used for taping.  Anyone know what their abilities are?  Here is a pic from vegas.

No idea how the Ipaq compares to other PDAs, but they are using a Core Sounds PDAudio CF card. Pretty cool idea, but much more expensive than DAT and JB3. If you don't already have a PDA, it would probably be more than a used laptop/VX setup. If the card was like $100 and storage was cheaper it would be tempting though.

The card allows 24 bit recording through a 1/8 toslink, but you'd need ~4 gigs/show.

Storage is a big problem, the largest CF cards are around 1gb, and that is not going to give you anything more than about 1/2 at 24 bit (give or take)  If you go microdrive the largest now is 4gb, and that is only going to give you around 2hrs.  

So, cool gadget?  yeah!

Feasable?  Eh...


Plus, I thought there was reliability problems at 24?

I use an an IPAQ and PDAudio card.  I have not used it for 24 bit taping in the field.  The biggest problem is the limits on memory size and cost.  It is fantastic for stealthing at 16 bit.  See the following thread.

I taped with a guy last week who was using a HP pda. He said he'd been running 24/48 for a while now with no problems. I could have sworn he said he was using 5gb cards with his but I could be wrong. Total cost for the whole setup was around $1300.

I use an iPaq 3835 (a few years old).  It works fine for 16bit, but I just can't get it work at 24bit which is the whole reason I bought it.  The problem may be that I'm using 5GB Toshiba pcmcia drives - I've been told the CF cards are faster and would probably solve my problem.  Certain 5xxx series iPaqs are also recommended over the 38xx.
