Title: OTG drive problem
Post by: Simp-Dawg on October 27, 2005, 09:58:17 PM
so i picked up this unit from newegg, and a brand new 40gb 2.5" hdd
http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16817145165
i installed the drive, the pc sees it, i formatted it, good to go, right?
wrong.

when i turn the drive on, it doesn't show me the drive's free space on the lcd like it is supposed to according to the poorly translated instructions, and there are no others to be found anywhere.
so when hooked up to a pc, the thing works fine, reads cards, you can transfer files, etc.

but it doesn't do anything except turn on when it's not hooked up.  battery is charged, light comes on, but there's nothing happening!

WTF?!?!

Man, that thing is cheap. If you do get it to work, that would be great. Good luck Josh.

tried reformatting, removing and reinserting drive, there's no firmware to flash or anything...DAMNIT!  i need this for vegoose, leaving later tonight.  no way i'm bringing a laptop with me into the grounds to transfer shit off of...don't even want to bring it to vegas period.  this thing works fine as an external drive but not as a standalone device...which is the entire purpose of it!

Maybe you can find tech support in Vegas? Good idea. I hope it works. Good Luck and +T for your troubles.

sorry to hear that simpy :(

I noticed awhile back that OTG doesnt ALWAYS mean that it can act as a standalone HD, its just 'quick/portable' HD space, you have to specifically find ones that say something like 'doesnt need to be connected to PC/Mac to be used as a HD/Card Reader' or something like that

sux you got burned :'(

Yeah, no kidding...
But, does it work? Does it work as a stand alone? That really would be cool.

bean that drive doesn't specify that it doesn't need to be connected to pc/mac either...and it's basically the same thing as the one you link to.  just by a different company.

plus, it doesn't function as it is described as doing in standalone mode, when it is connected to the pc...what i mean is, when standalone it should copy files to the drive and show progress on the lcd...it doesn't do that when connected to a pc, because it is acting as a card reader, where you manipulate files in the windows explorer view.  that tells me it IS in fact supposed to function as a standalone device, because when connected to a pc it is in usb mode and can only be controlled via windows.  i'll call tech support tomorrow from vegas, and see what they say.  doubtful i'll get it working though.

josh, looks like you got the same thing as i did, just with a different skin.  mine works perfectly as a standalone card reader.  simple question that must be asked; did you format it as fat32?

if you want, i can overnight you mine for the weekend.  i think it's got 19gb free.

called tech support on the way up to vegas, got it working...the standalone card reader feature doesn't recognize partitions larger than 32gb, so i repartitioned it to smaller partitions and it works as it should!

what was the name of your drive simp-dawg?
I am in the market of buying a drive currently and it seems there is not as many options as there was a year ago...
I'm either looking for a unit ready to go or an enclosure at the least and I can always buy a drive for it.
Really want to find one that will power a card reader or has a compact flash slot on it so I can plug the cf card directly into it and have one less piece of EQ to carry.
The link you pasted doesn't work on newegg any longer it just brings up search page results.
I was thinking of getting a Venus gogo enclosure but a review I read said it couldn't power a card reader..
Plus it doesn't have a cf card reader slot either so it doesn't look like that will help me very much.
likewise I don't want to bring a laptop along with me really...
