Title: annoying clapping, should i try and edit?
Post by: andrewkw on April 16, 2005, 05:06:09 PM
I taped queens of the stone age in vancouver the other day and due to the fact it was a seated venue and no room at all in the sbd area for a stand i taped my akg tbar to one of their gear cases at the board.  This ment the mics were only about 5 feet high and not really properly configured in xy or din which is what i normally tape in.  I have a single loud clapper who claps in the right channel, you can still hear it in the left but its louder in the right.  I think all of the claps except one happen inbetween songs.

Should I :

A) just leave it since the show itself sounds fine its just inbetween songs that is somewhat annoying
B) Lower the volume of the clapping in cool edit pro
C) Paste the left channel and have his clapping in mono

I'm leaning towards A since i normally don't edit my shows unless i have to, but since the mics were already so low i had to do a bit of a bass cut so i'm not opposed to further edits.

If you do decide to edit, Andrew, there are some great suggestions in this thread.

Yup, applying light/medium compression to applause between songs is easy to do and sounds alright - the peaks are usually transient enough that compressing doesn't cause distortion, pumping, etc.  I do so occasionally for amplified acoustic performances when the aud overpowers the music between songs.

yup, i always compress the clapping down when it's louder than the music. who the hell cares about the dynamics of clapping anyway?

I would go with c if it's not during any music.  in soundforge you can just high light and click "copy other channel".

I would personally use compression. Especially since the claps are between songs, you should be able to squash the heck out of them with little problems.

I tend to prefer not to paste the other channel over b/c it sounds a little goofy to me when the tape flips back and forth from mono to stereo.

Yeah, go for some compression if the clap spikes (during the music) are higher than anything else. Set the threshold at (or just above) the loudest part of the music so any stuff that's louder gets it.
