Any suggestions for ... Cicadas? NOW with sample!
« on: August 21, 2008, 09:26:18 PM »
Ok, I came home to check out the recording Son of MSTaper made Tuesday night at a show I was late to and I was wondering what the odd noise was in the first three tracks. My wife said it was Cicadas (those funky bugs that shed their shells on trees and such). I asked again because it was nice and quiet by the time the main act came on. I honestly doubt that there's anything you can do about insect noises, so I'm really just goofing on this one. ;) They were gone by the fourth song. I guess it add an outdoor southern ambiance to the recording!  ;D If I knew how to post a sample, I'd do it just for fun.

...crickets and cicadas sing...  a rare and different tune...  terrapin station...

Think of em as a blessing to your recording!

Insect frequencies are usually very specifically harmonic and can be removed (often) by narrow-band filtering etc. Can you post an example?

Actually, as I live in southern Ontario Canada, I'd like to hear a sample just to see if your sicadas sounds like our sicadas.  I know from all the news reports of the huge population explosion in Ohio and surrounding states that their's don't sound like ours! Their's had more of a steady pulse to them. ours are more of a sustained bzzzzzz.

Could someone please tell me how to post a sample? I can create an MP3 easy enough, but after that I'm lost! ::) MSTaper

Nasty! :) Unfortunately you are in trouble with this one, the Cicada noise is quite broad-band and covers some important frequency bands in your recording, the best thing you could do is EQ down a few dB at the frequencies shown. I tried some spectral filtering but the nature of the Cicada noise means that it's hard to reduce without introducing artifacts in the recording.

Yeah, they were pretty active that night. When I arrived for the main act, they were luckily gone and it was nice and quiet. Of course, he was a loud louder than this acoustic act. It was only noticeable for three of his five songs. He's local so it's not a big deal. Thanks for taking the time to check it out. MSTaper
