What it takes to run phantom mics with Sony M-10?
« on: March 22, 2010, 04:54:54 AM »

My rig is CA-9100 preamp and Sony M-10. Is is possible to run Phantom mics adding a mic power supplier for instance a Denecke to my rig?

Which equiment would you suggest?
Should I just let it go and move upscale with a 722 (it would cost me dearly though)?

Thanks for your reply to a newbie like me.

I'd highly recommend a littlebox preamp from naiant.com (mshilarious on ts.com).  Just an excellent preamp for the money, provides phantom power, and would pair up nicely with an M10.  I use mine paired with my Sony D50 and it works and sounds great.
Mics: Microtech Gefell m20/m21 (nbob/pfa actives), Line Audio CM3, Church CA-11 cards
Preamp:  none <sniff>
Recorders:  Sound Devices MixPre-6, Sony PCM-M10, Zoom H4nPro

^^ I second the Littlebox.  Great gear. I run one into my M10.

The PS/2 is the smallest thing you can get... Honestly I have never used mine since I don't do much undercover work these days.  It works, but doesn't provide gain, so you run it through the mic input on the Sony.  Esp if you're not concerned about keeping a very low profile, the littlebox is the best bang for the buck by far.

On Yard Sale a Sound Devices MixPre is availlable.

Would that be ok to connect to my Sony M-10? or better go for the Naiant littlebox (cheaper and longer battery life)?

It certainly can be - you'd just need the right cable (I think probably the same as you need for littlebox - 2xRCA>mini)

I don't know of any known advantage of the MixPre over the littlebox, but I have never used one.  Much like those Church mics you have, the littlebox is made by a member of this board, and seems to be acknowledged to offer by far the most "bang for the buck".  It also has the advantage of being totally customizable as well.

Not having done a full hands-on with a Littlebox I can't comment on its usability but I have liked the quality of recordings done with them.  There doesn't seem to be any dispute with its quality:price ratio, especially considering how customizable it is, and it's highly regarded by the folks here.  I've been considering adding one to my arsenal.
That being said, I've never owned but have used a MixPre a few times and it's also a great mic pre, albeit, at a much larger price tag.  Like all things Sound Devices, it's built like a tank and the sound of the preamp (or lack thereof) is excellent; very clean.  In addition to full-size XLR outputs there's a 1/8" out that you can patch into an M-10, R-09 or any other device that has a 1/8" stereo input.  One thing that may or may not concern a potential user is that the gain pots are very sensitive.  It's easy to drive the output hot if you have a heavy hand while adjusting them.  By all counts, they're both very solid pieces of gear but, as acidjack stated, there's not a great advantage of a MixPre over a Littlebox other than XLR outs especially when you compare the cost of each.
