I've been asked to record someone at a jazz club in NYC. I will be seating front and center. I will be using my Church microphones and church preamp along with a Sony PCMD50 recorder. What should I consider to get the best recording? Since I have the okay to record the set, should I place the mics on the stage or somewhere else to get the best recording?

My initial suggestion would be to place them on stage (or at the stage lip), center, roughly 3ft high, split ~20-30cm. 

Is this an acoustic performance or reinforced with a PA?  How many musicians?

Yeah, we need more info. Are you using cards or omnis If cards, run DIN, which is 20cm/90*, omnis, split them about 30-40cm

Yes it is a jazz club. It is a quintet and there will be a PA. I am using the CAFS mics that Church sells.

If you are using Cafs I would recommend you wear them... If not then use a dummy head. Best place for these mics is on your head. Taped to eye glasses just above the ear facing towards the action. Gain on the preamp to 90%

If the performer has a beard, clip your mics to it.  That is by far the best.

I don't know, I'd tend more towards the handlebar mustache method than the beard method, but then again, I've never tried the beard method.

So turn the gain on the preap to 90%. What about the gain on the Sony? I usually have it at 100 and then adjust the preamp gain. If what you suggest is better, what should I have the Sony set to in terms of gain?

Get the remainder of the gain from the Sony. Get most of the gain from my preamp.

Unity gain on the Sony PCM-M10 is at Level 4
