Not sure if you are speaking of this guy, but up in the NW region I see this taper and his wife only every so often taping using a Nak550 and a pair of Nak300's. Funny too, since he is kind of strange about his rig, insisting that DAT is inferior to analog or how you should run your nice mics into his 550 deck since they would sound so much better than through that pesky V3 or DAT.    Usually this is communicated while he is butt-ass drunk and argumentative. I just overlook all that taper BS shit and enjoy observing his vintage deck in action. Those old 550's are beasts but well built!!

I've read some funny stories about folks, in the hayday of stealth Dead tapin, sneakin these monsters on wheel chairs with a person sitting on it pretending to be handycaped (or perhaps in some cases they were). Anyone else have any funny stories about sneakin old anlog decks into Dead shows??

THAT"S HIM!! He's real serious about it too...as he's plunking all those 'D' cell batteries in the tape deck. Never heard a copy of that show I was at; but I'd be interested in hearing the results. He was nice and all (a pox on me for not remembering his name); and his lady thanked me many times for helping them get their rig into the show. It was funny, though, after running into people who had the latest technology busting out of their bags, to see some one with that setup. Brought a tear of nostalgia to my eye.

I agree and should have pointed this out. 

Although this has been argued to death over the years and I refuse to take sides.......both have the pro's and cons.
Portability for most of us wins over quality issue on DAT vs Analog.......have yet to see a analog deck as small as an M1 that sounds as nice.

Stealth analog?  Right.  Maybe as a patcher with a D-6.

When I got my D-5Pro that was stealth.  The Nak550 and the Teac PC-10 I used before that not only used boxcars of D cells and were the size of big city phone books they had no phantom power.  So...  in addition to sneaking in the machine, the blank tapes, the extra batteries, cords, mics, shotguns and a mic stand you had to add some pre-amps to the mix.

Even at dead shows where taping was allowed when you were in, you still had to sneak the gear past security.  I used to be really good at subtly twisting my body during the pat down to keep hands away from whereever the hardware was.  We would split up the gear among several friends and go in separately because once they found batteries, cables, mics or anything else you could count on your whole bag being dumped out and a thorough frisking that would find pretty much anything you had.

In addition to having several people carry stuff in, we would have extra friends waiting to see if you got in.  If you did not, you would hand off the gear out of sight of security so they could give it a run as you would get checked very well when you came back in.

We also carried extra blank tapes.  If you saw security taking tapes from people you would swap out blanks for the show so far.  Somehow those knucklheads never caught on to that one.

OK.  Here's a good story.  I will try to make it short, I have told it enough times to keep to the best details.

Red Rocks Colorado 1984, Grateful Dead's summer run.  for any who have been there and taped you will really appreciate this story.  If you haven't been there, be aware that the amphitheatre is on the side of the mountain.  You have to line up at one of 4 entrances which can wind from close to a parking lot all the way to where they take tickets.  In those days, they would open up the gates by noon so we could all get in and get plenty ready for the show.  If you weren't in line by 8 Am you were not going to be FOB.  Of ocurse, the only GD taping back then was FOB as this was just beore they started the section.
One additional piece of information: the venue hated tapers and did not "officially" allow tapers in, however, if you got in your gear, most of the inside security ignored us and let us tape.

MY buddy notices on night 1 as we were all getting hassled pretty hard trying to sneak in equipment that the mens bathroom had a "window" carved out only about 5 feet off the floor of the bathroom, but it was against one of the sides of the mountain, so the base of this window was about 15 feet below on a part of the rocks near one entrance where you might wait in line.  the best part, after we looked at this spot was that it was out of sight of any security. Sooooooo, being the sneaky Deadheads that we were, we concocted this plan.

The plan was to bring in some climbing rope with a D Link attached and a couple of nearly empty backpacks with some one in line that had no gear.  That morning,we slowly put all the gear in small groups behind the base of the bathroom and had two of us wait all morning in that spot so we wouldn't get noticed.  then my buddy started to tell the other tapers who showed up in line.  In the end, about 5 sets of mics and almost 15 Sony D-5's and various accessories were waiting to get hoisted up with the rope.  Sure enough, about 10 minutes after the gates opened, my buddy was in the bathroom letting the yellow rope with pack attahced down from the window.  Me and the other guy start loading mics. decks, batteries and what have you in to the bag, the bag starts to get tugged in and won't go through the opening,  it's too full!  it was like a scene from a spy movie, they tug a few times, notice it won't make it in and lower it back down to us.  we notice what is wrong and load it half as full.  BOOM, it goes through!  he drops the empty pack back down and we just kept going until all the gear was inside!!!

They told us it was a little weird looking if any one noticed several dudes go in the bathroom with empty back packs and leave with full to the brim packs and mic stands, the whole bit.

That's my story, and I'm sticking with it!!!!!!!!

You can still buy TCD-5's new at B & H photo-video and also MArantz PMD 430's.  As some one was saying, there are still a handful of Nak 550's out there on E bay and the like.  If you were going to do SBD or studio recoridng you could go TAscam or Nak.

I didn't comment on the UA-5 part:  You could run mics>UA-5>analog out>Analog Cassette.
Again, if you were to do this, you might use a Sony or Marantz portable.

I still have the impuse to stop to buy batteries for my deck on the way out to a show. I just can' get used to the rechargable power pack. And I have no power for my flash light. I used to run my old d cells for light.

I stil regret the day I traded my d-5 to Pete who works for the Allman's. Actually Kyle I think you actualy went to NYC to buy it. They were having a sale I gave you cash to pick it up. Man I still listen to the tapes with the old 201's and the M88's. Or the Binaural tape from Toronto with the Big Boss Man encore.

I remember buying that D-5!  yeah, we were buying them in the city for about $400 or 450 at that time!!!
I still have one of mine, it only records on one channel now.  the second one died in the early 90's.  I brought it to an offical SONY service center in dallas that had repaired it twice before, they called and told me it was in such bad shape they wouldn't be able to repair it; that so much "coca cola" had been spilled in it, the circuit board was all gummed up, heads in bad shape, etc.  I went back to get the shell and threw it away years later.
hmmmm, binaural Toronto, yummy.  Do you have a binaural copy of GD Hampton 84?  I can't find mine, but that was one of my favorite Binaurals.  BTW, I have spoken with CK a bit in the past year.  I am working on getting some of the binaural masters and putting them to digi.

Go Butch Go!  What a hoot it was to carry that rubber Sennheiser head in to all those dead shows.  Not one security guard ever turned the thing over and looked at the mic mount or the word Sennheiser on the bottom!  I think Butch finally melted in summer of 85 or 86 in the back window of some ones car.  I think the amount of actual binaural GD masters is somewhere around 50 shows.

ive used a rubber head before but only in a recording class...i cant imagine running that in the field, damn i bet that was funny as hell. please say you ran it 10' up and not at head height, i would have loved to see that. (granted, i wasnt even born when you guys were running it).

This set of Sennheiser Binaurals( MKE4401's???) don't know the exact model number} was bought by a buddy of ours in ealry feb 1984 we used it for some spring 84 and summer/ fall 84 shows.  It came back in the summer of 85 for a short run and did many local non-dead shows in the Maine area.
The frist time we ran it, it was about 4 rows FOB right in front of Healy.  He and Don Pearson came down and asked about it, listened to some headphone stuff( I guess it was beteen sets) and asked us to mail them copies.!  OF course, we did. 
At one show that I can't remember exactly which one, Bobby was so wasted he just kept staring at the head, it was about 10 rows from the stage, and all night long he would track his gaze back to Butch.  BY this point we would bring Butch in to the show with paint on his face, lightning bolt shiny stickers going down his cheek, and a bandana on his head.  When the security gaurds would ask what it was, we would say, "It's a Deadhead" and smile real wide.  We were never refused, not once with this line

they work great as preamps(no phantom though).
for awhile we ran mics>B18(phantom)>PMD-430(pause mode to use the pre)>SBM>dat

made some great Phish section tapes with this rig in 97/98!

I had no idea you were in to the binaural!  Yes, this is the mic's my friend owned.  I think the pre amp crapped out on him in the late 80's and he never had them fixed.

I didn't get a chance to listen to his stuff, but I have to tell you, it probably sounded as good (maybe better) than my Dickey Betts & Great Southern sounded... Man, I got a great tape of wind noise. ;-)

Somebody correct me if the alzheimers is setting in..  I used the D-5pro in the early 80s,  If I remember right the "m" had 1/4 inch mic inputs.  My pro had xlr.  Most tapers I knew on the Dead tours were running XL-II tapes.  later when the IIS came out I saw a lot of those.

There is no phantom power in those units but the input section is pretty clean, can take high loads and the metering is outstanding.  Some times I ran 451e when I could deal with the preamps and all, but there were a lot of Senn 421s on tour.

I am not sure what you gain from running the UA-5 unless it is just for the phantom power.  Bring lots of D-Cells and practice your tape flipping technique!

Disc switching seems like a nice alternative to A/C/B/D tape switches on 45 minute sides with rewinding during the break.  let's see... looks like there is about 8-9 minutes left... do you think they will jump into China/Rider?...  shit!

I remember a bunch of Uher Reel to Reel tapers - running at least two decks
5" reels at 7.5IPS you'd get, I don't know, about 15 minutes - they'd stagger
the starts and flips and reassemble them afterwards, splicing as needed.

as stated before, I think those masters would be superior to any DAT -
its just in the transfers that you run into trouble.

the last time I saw that was Oxford Plains Speedway, I think, 1988.

I was going through my taper closet and saw the old D6.  that was
stealthable with the old sony stereo mics, or good for patching line in...

I have seen running D5 go for between $150 and $350 recently.  $350 seems quite high considering they went for around $500 street when new.  I have not noticed any difference between the various versions price-wise.  I would think that if you got one in pretty decent running condition that $200-250 is pretty fair.

Funny, a boston show...never.  Alsways the latest and greatest taping tech.

Naks, Senns, Beyers and Sony mics rule.  Sony D5's are commonplace.  Giant shotguns being run into a D8 is about has high tech as it gets at some of the shows I go to.

Ran analog from 1997 to summer 1999. Still have the Marantz PMD 430 in the closet, in the original box, collecting dust.  Can't bring myself to sell it since I know it'll fetch next to nothing used. 

In 1998 I had a radio show with my buddy, and having master analogs was great for that.  I'd grab a tape, bring it to the station, pop it on and that'd be it.  No editing, transferring, etc.

Mike Millard? He wasn't a GD fan, though...

Dan Liff used to run a Nak 550 and carry a wheel chair in the trunk of his huge 4 door car on GD tour.  He would then recruit skinny guys or girls ( think miracle ticket) to sit in the chair on top of the tape deck with a blanket over the "handicapped person" and the rest of the rig below the chair in some sort of shelf he had.  Worked 95% of the time.

 I met him on summer 1982 tour and know he did this for at least 82 and 83 tours.  Who knows if his tapes ever survived and made it to some folks that properly archived them or not.  I was patched in to his rig at KC 1982-08-02 or 3??)The last time I ever spoke with him must have been 1988 at an MSG Rainforest show.  (apologies if he wanted to remain anonymous, but hey it's been over 20 years!!)
