Anyone taping the Nathanson/Howie/OAR shows?
« on: July 25, 2004, 12:42:02 PM »
Well, I'm not gonna lie, I'm just looking for the Matt sets.  It appears as if the only one out so far is the Chicago show (the first one).  Anyone know if more have been taped?  I'd love to hear some more :)  Thanks!

This sucks on the Portland show.  They've just moved it from probably the most beautiful best sounding outdoor venue in Oregon to the shittiest indoor venue possible.   *Grumble*

Saw the tour w/o Matt on 8/8 (Graham Colton opened and was really good) and it was not of one my better concert experiences.

The venue gave me crap about bring in my stuff even though all 3 are pro-taping. I had to go back to my car and conceal it. I ended up stealthing and only got the OAR set. The crowd was the WORST. During Howie, the drunken fratboys screamed "homo" and "O-A-R" the whole time. The guy next to me was passed out for all of his set.  During OAR they screamed constantly and yelled out song requests without end (ever heard of a setlist?). My recording is on the Archive, but it reflects the above scenario.

The crowd basically ruined the night for me even though I enjoyed Howie (though I wasn't familiar with his music) and OAR put on a great show as well (no flames please).

This is the problem with OAR, they put on a great show imo, but the crowd is always horrible, I am debating releasing my version of 8/1 of oar bc the crowd is obscene.  Some guy recognized me from school and decided to scream my name at the top of his lungs throughout the show and in general the crowd makes the show horrible for someone taping anything but sbd.  If they give you trouble just refuse to leave and demand to talk to the soundman (i think JR is his name)  Thats what I did and they eventually let us in.  Also if you are forced to sneak your stuff in, ask for a sbd patch, they always provide them, thats the best way to get around their shitty crowd.  +T for your troubles Brian.

talk to the OAR guys after the show, and tell them about what happened re: crowd. More often than not, get there early, tell them you're taping. you can either grab a patch, get in the cage, or they'll tell the crowd to STFU so your tape will be better....

one reason I now love them rather than don't.

Yeah, I remember going to an OAR show where I had to sneak all the stuff in, but the OAR crew was still more than happy to give me a patch :)

if the venue gives you shit bringing in gear to an o.a.r. show tell them to contact go ask jp(sound guy) or joel(tour manager) about their taping policy and you should be fine, it also helps to bring a hard copy of their taping policy from www.etree.oarfans.com to show security if they give you shit

and as long as your mics are atleast 11ft up you should be fine, i taped them 7/10 in chicago and there is lots of crowd noise but no chatter during songs you just hear the audience singing along at some points, it captures the audience energy and participation, i used to tape soundboards but they just sound empty now, you should try to do a matrix or record sbd and aud seperatley then mix after the show, i was very satisfied with my 7/10 recording

get your mics up high and you'll be fine, and watch your stand carefully the drunk idiots love knocking them over

If you want to bring home your gear in the condition you took it in, I would recommend (a) not flying mics @ an o.a.r. show (b) taking the patch - they have a patchbox with xlr, rca, and 1/4" outs, and (c) if you want to run mics, get a bunch of big guys to surround you and your gear to protect it from everyone else.
