portable Hard Drive - best options??
« on: October 12, 2005, 07:23:54 AM »
I'm looking to add a portable HD to use at home for now, but also for future use on the road, etc.  Anyone know of good deals/options?

mainly looking for something that isn't huge, somewhat affordable, and able to adapt to USB 1.0 on up...

thanks!

if i were you, i'd just get a normal hard drive and buy a external hard drive enclosure...you can get 250gb hdd's for less than $100 now, and the enclosure on ebay would probably run you around $20 or so.

also, usually anything that says usb2.0 will work on a usb1.0 - and sometimes you can enclosures that have a firewire connection in addition to the usb connections.

Because nothing says "I have lots of money and am sort of confused as to how to spend it" like Bose.

so to break this down into cll-terms...

i could buy a regular hd, and put it into some sort of case - essentially making my own 'portable hd'

right?

how difficult is it?  and where do i need to go/what am i looking for?

thanks dude

sorry - thats always a problem for me, as i usually have no idea what i'm actually looking for

more for a computer/storage solution.  i'll continue to record on dat, probably moving to a MT2496 soon.  at some point i figure i'll be on the road taping, and would like to be able to dump files onto a hd - via a laptop.  usb/firewire connections are most important - but i don't want the thing to be obsolete or unusable in the near future

thanks

if you're just looking for a portable hard drive and not a hard drive recorder, what i said before should have you good to go.

check out www.dealnews.com - they usually always have hard drives listed that are on sale.

right now newegg has a 300gb drive on sale for $120
http://www.newegg.com/product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822140166&CMP=BAC-dealmac&ATT=6L300R0

then you'll just need a hard drive enclosure, here's one from newegg for $25
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817186101

from there, the hard drive would just be mounted in the enclusure, it slide right in or drop in or something to that extent.

if you're running xp or win2k, i'm pretty sure all you'll need to do is hook it up to your computer and it'll probably install the drivers instaneously and you should be good to go.

thats all ya need, and you'll get a portable hard drive for a hell of a lot cheaper than buying an actual portable hard drive.
