Agreed on the line v. mic in issue... Low gain is a nice option to use esp. in loud applications..
I have run painfully loud on Low Gain and never had an issue...
Again - if you have the luxury of recording in familiar spaces on a regular basis you will develop an ear for the room. Get to know the sound guy(s) and ask them... Soft? Loud? or Damm Loud?
Also keep in mind that your taping position and microphones will also contribute to you levels in thier own ways... my u89's only 8-10 ft form a stage with a band w/drum kit created very different levels than my ADK's...
The 5P's are great but no matter how hard you try you will eventually mess something up... Murphy!
On the opposite end of the spectrum...the 24/96 signal is so smooth and detailed I have had no issues running conservatively in rooms or with bands that I am not 100% familiar with and correcting via normalization in post work - Thoughts from other appreciated on this end.
