Topic: Other A/D converter mods

I know we talk all the time about the ua-5 and its modification for satndalone operation without a computer. Well, I was looking on ebay at the huge selection of a/d converters with xlr ins and various out and spec, etc.....and was wondering if there are mods that can be made to all of these (or any of these) other converters so that they, just like the ua-5, can operate w/o a computer?

A qualified individual could modify *any* ADC to work for our purposes.  The question becomes:  is it be worth the cost?

Bear in mind - they have been making standalone A>D converters long before todays USB-type devices - many older devices out there...

Hey -  I'm not sure why nobody has had a go at the m-audio transit.  It's under $80 and is supposed to have quite a good AKM a>d chip in it.
- could power thru USB cable
- has optical out and analog line out
- pocket size

The big question is whether or not the chips are logic controlled thru drivers etc and if it's possible to set a hardware mode where it just does it's thing as soon as it powers up.  Anyone want to buy me one?

yeah, limited to 100 dB... the rest of your gear and recording environments ain't no better!  I figured that someone using a sub $100 a>d is probably going into a JB3, which is limited to 16 bits.  I just can't see someone buying a 24 bit recording device with digital inputs (not a laptop) and then turning around and using this thing.
