Anyone mind giving the old man the fyi on this gear?

the billbox? it's just another name for the Reuthelhuber Box... should be right up your alley old man. The N-Box is basically an updated version.

I let the kings of stealth give the specifics as I've only seen each once or twice and never run one.

Thanks Nick I may have to do that. I know the schematics are impossible to find, but worth a shot.

There are a couple shows up on archive.org - I'd recommend giving 'em a listen.   :)

it is a power supply for schoeps caps that will feed a dat or A/D a line level signal...thereby taking the bodies out of the equation and phantom power out of the equation

FWIW, since these stealth setups are discussed fairly infrequently and info is often hard to come by, here's some basic info on another alternative, the Sonosax SX-M2/LS2 (Lemosax).

that's a good alternative to the nbox.  good thing about the nbox is u get cables & nbox for about what you'd pay for the lemosax.  just some food for thought ;)

This is true!  The N-Box is definitely the less-expensive option.  F-ing Schoeps and their damn expensive cables.

awesome! hadn't seen one in person.

how much do one of these boxes run? and how are they powered?

mk4/nbox/modsbm-1 would make a sweet stealth rig...

There's at least one recording up on archive.org with a similar setup: MK4 > NBox > D100.  Download a few tracks and give it a listen.

taping what?

sci, bisco, smaller jazz acts,... nothing unusual.

I'm not too familiar with the AD2k, but from what he told me it sounded like the Nbox put the levels inbetween the low and high sensitivity settings of the AD2k.  With the AD2k set low, levels were too low.  With the AD2k set high, levels went over.  Something like that.

more importantly it sounds better than the lemoshizzle

Not to my ears.  Fortunately, there are at least a couple quality stealth boxes for different ears/brains/playback systems.

run them head to head instead of comparing different shows and you will probably sing a different tune

Would love to, I enjoy running direct comps.  Don't know of anyone in Cleveland with an NBox, though.  The comp would reveal the different sonic characteristics, yes, but reasonable people may have different sonic preferences so it's a bit bold IMO to suggest I'll sing a different tune.  A blind comp I ran between the warm-mod-UA5 and V3 revealed about 50% of people preferred the warm-mod UA5 even though the V3 is traditionally considered a superior piece of equipment.

I'll have to try to track down an NBox, would be a lot of fun to run the comp!   Shoot, if you're right, I could sell the Lemosax setup and save a few bucks.  :)

Good input, Boogie - thanks for the feedback.  I'm just getting into the stealth game so this is all good to hear, kinda learning as I go.  Hopefully I can track down a local NBox for some comps, would really like to hear these head to head.

Just want to throw out another endorsement for the rbox/nbox.  I have and frequently run an rbox in stealth situations, it doesnt get much better/easier.

There have been a very few situations where the fixed gain was borderline too low (unamplified jazz @ symphony hall) but, with the sbm1 pretty much maxed out it was always more or less fine.

I can try to dig out a few good recordings with it if yall want em.

oh and I could give a sh*t what the wave forms look like... it's all about how it sounds!

you realize of course the wav form is the graphical expression of how it sounds right?

i just mention it as most people have better visual accuity than accoustic..

boogie

yeah I'm fully aware of that fact  ::)

but if I was throwing around $1100 on AUDIO equipment I'd be more concerned with how it SOUNDS than how it looks on paper (see anything ever made by core-sound)

not an endorsement or a knock on the n-box either way. I don't really do enough actual stealth work to warrant a purchase... my fob rig will be ccm4/m148/modsbm-1
