Title: Split omnis on stage ? (ADK TL content)
Post by: Xpanding Man on February 18, 2004, 12:55:37 PM
Will this work ?  If so, what kind of spacing would be ideal ?

This is for a masters student's recital at UM tonight; I pulled my best tape in an unfamiliar venue ever on Monday night, but I think it coould be better !

Should I just stick with the ORTF 110 that I ran on Monday ?  Would DIN help the bass resonse at all, or is it time for me to try a split omni ?

thanks,
john

The stage is arched, with the centerstage being about 3 feet further out than the tip of stage left/right

The stage is about 4 feet off the ground, the musicians are anywhere from 6 feet to 15 feet away from the center staqe lip

i'm thinking i wouldn't be able to do more than about a 4 or 5 foot spacing, since the musicians are spread out about 20 feet wide on stage

is five feet enough/proper spacing ?

I run five feet and it sounds great.

I should have been more clear with my question, how are the musicians setup on stage?

The horns are always front/center  .....guys with amps (bass, guitar, etc) are behind them , spread out like a typical 'amp wall' about 10 feet... somewhat even with them, though slightly in front, are the piano/keys and the drummer/vibes, so something like this

                              Stage lip center
Stage lip left                                                      Stage lip right

                                   H o r n s

        Drums                                                          piano/keys

                        Bass amp          Guitar amp

the drums, horns, and pianos are each about 6 feet from their respected stage lips

i'm obiously thinking that one mic b/t the horns and drummer , and the other b/t the horns and the piano, each mic about 2 or 3 feet from the stage lip

that would be about a 7 or 8 foot spread

I'd setup between the horns and the drums, closer to the horns because the drums will be LOUD... and then midway between the horns and the keys.

you could also setup DFC onstage and run blumlein!

mike, let's hear about the jecklin disk!

You knew it was coming!

Great tool! nuff said.....

anyone see the pic of the Jecklin Disc in the new stereophile?  its buried in some article about recording a choir with 3 pairs of mics.  i only scanned through it, but I believe they ran the dpa's/j.disc into a Metric Halo 2882.

I'll add my 2c.  I would not use the blumlein pair right in front of the horns, they will likely overpower the piano.  I think the 8' spread was a good idea, splitting the horns and drums on one side and the horns and piano on the other.  The image may be pretty exaggerated left to right, but it should yeild the best balance between instruments.  Another idea would be an m/s pair centered in front of the horns at stage lip.  You could do the stereo mixdown in post and control the 'mid' channel to keep the horns balanced with the other instruments.

yeah, i'm tempted to run the MS, which i've been meaning to try

just to be sure, on a LD mic like mine, the 8 setting is congifured front/back, not left/right, correct ?  in other words, the figure 8 mic would be perpendicular to the cardiod mic if they were vertically aligned in their mounts ?

Is it possible to actually set the mics up split amongst the players? Like on either side of the horn section, right in the middle? With omni's this will yeild excellent results.

That's what I was initially thinking would work in that situation.

couple of things :

1- the guy moved his recital (which he knew would fill UM's biggest recital hall) to the smallest room possible, because 'he liked the sound better in there'

2- nobody was let inside until 10 minutes before the show, and it soon became obvious that splits would not be practical

However, I will be doing more of these music school recitals at the original venue and they always set the guys up the same way , so the split omnis will done soon; perhaps this sunday when the UM concert jazz band plays with IRA SULLIVAN, who wants a recording.

UM has produced some incredible musicians  ;D
