The new C 414 XLS and the C 414 XL II offer nine pickup patterns that enable it to choose the perfect setting for every application. For live-sound applications and fixed installations, all controls can be disabled easily for trouble-free use, and the peak hold LED displays even the shortest overload peaks.

The perfect thing for when you can't decide if you want to run Subcards or Cards... run that thing half way in between!

Seriously though... There is a significant difference between the sound of Subcards - Cards - Hypers.... but I have a hard enough time setting up trying to decide what I should run on a given night.... and I think more choices would actually be more confusing.

It's not setting it up that would give me trouble, it would be trying to remember how it was set 3 years later when I actually got around to tracking out the show.

It's the perfect mix between the previous 414's and the 422/426.  You get the 9 patterns with the ability to run any config, not just XY.

Just a hint but I always will speak all the pertinent info into one of my mics after a show.  Setup, config, distance, etc before I shut down completely.    Sure does help a few years later when I finally get to tracking out the show.

The only thing is with used 414's going for $1100 in the yard sale, it's going to be a hard nut to swallow to buy a brand new set at retail just for this feature.

Please note:  I made some big assumptions in creating the pattern images, and the assumptions may or may not apply to the new C414.  The original post:

Here're some generic images of what the C34 (and I assume C422, as they use the same control box) patterns look like from each of the steps on the S42 selector box.  Big Assumption:  each step on the S42 adjusts the pattern in equal increments.  There are 9 steps on the S42 selector box, from omni (step 1) through cardioid (step 5) to figure-8 (step 9).

Found the interim steps interesting.  Looks like step 6 is similar to supercardioid and step 7 similar to hypercardioid.  Curious to try out the two interim positions between card and omni.

Thanks Brian,  your chart is a good reference though.  I used quite a bit with my 426.
