Shure SM-58 voal mic (48V Phantom or no?)
« on: December 28, 2005, 05:49:54 PM »
Hi everyone. Happy holidays. I recently bought a Shure SM-58 vocal mic for my Mom to use for karaoke. These microphones are very popular for vocalists/singers around the world. I cannot figure out if they can run safely off of 48V or not. They have an XLR jack, so I bought an XLR-to-1/4" cable to connect it to the Mic Input on the karaoke machine. Anyway, I must have a defective mic because I can't get it to run on the karaoke machine or even my PCM-M1 DAT Line In and even M1 Mic In jacks.

Thanks if you have any info,
Tom

  • There is nothing you can hold, for very long.

no need for 48V phantom and it wont hurt the mic anyway. Check to see if the mic input on the karoke machine is Low level (Balanced) or High Level (Unbalanced). It's likely a wiring problem because that mic will do either, depending on the wiring...

Absolutely NO. The SM-58 is a dynamic microphone.
Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one.
