SURPRISE! Another n00b thread!
« on: January 25, 2006, 07:22:06 PM »
Alright, so I've scrounged up a bit of money to buy my first mic+power rig.  I have a MD to record onto, and will probably be buying a Neuros III if it winds up being as awesome as it may.  But as for now, I wanted to buy a *basic* setup in order to actually decide if I enjoy taping or not.  It'll be a stealth rig, and I'd like to keep the total purchase price in the $100 range.  Here are a few options I've been flirting with:

http://stores.ebay.com/CHURCH-AUDIO Church Audio Omnis + Pre.  From searching thru the forums, I realize a lot of people have personal problems with this fellow, but it looks like he has a pretty good deal on mics.  There's a Chris Robinson show up on bt.etree.org using this setup and it's pretty impressive (a TS member did it I believe?).

SP-CMC-19's or 20's or SP-BMC-2 or 3's with a DIY Battery Box.

Giant Squids + Bat Box

From what I've gathered, Cards are better for stealthing (to cut out crowd chatter).  Split omnis are supposedly better for if I want to mount them on a regular rig.  These will be my only set of mics for the time being (probably until I graduate and get a real source of income), so if they could do both mediocrely, I'd be happy.  Most of the time I'll be patching, but these are for the shows I go to where I'll be the lone taper.

So, suggestions?

I'm guessing you mean the Rich Robinson 12/16/04 show:

http://bt.etree.org/details.php?id=11018

It wasn't taped by one of our members, but I'm just being picky, I did up it though. Despite the budget nature of the mics, I've listened to this show a number of times and its just great quality.

If you've just going to get one set of mics or caps, I'd recommend cards.

No experience with giant squid at all

*** Cough *** SPCMC2 or CMC2As  - one of the best budget cards around at the moment.

Can you up your budget to $200?..or check the yard sale for 2nd hand.

Cheers

As much as I wish I had more money to spend, I don't.  In fact, I have less.  My original price range was around $50, but my search soon showed me that was a joke, so I decided to double it.  So I really would like to stay around the $100 range.  I searched the yard sale area and the SP-CMC-2's do sometimes go for around $100 (If anyone wants to get rid of a pair and give a n00b a deal...), but I have a speech I told a friend I'd record for her coming up in a few weeks, so idk if I can wait around for the deal of the century.

Anyone else have any feedback?

I will give you my Sony Stereo mic.   It was the first mic I used and I loved it at the time.  It  has a stereo 1/8" which lets it connect right into your MD.  I've been waiting to give it to someone just starting out.  Since your on such a short budget, this should serve you well.  PM me your addy if you want it and I'll send your way Saturday.

Another +T for Jesse...very versatile mic too for what it is; it's popular with podcasters for interviews as well.

very awesome and +T to you! I have have that same exact mic to use with my Sony D8.
I posted another thread about it, but where can I get the clamp that is in your picture?

I can attest to this mic being perfect for the budget kid just starting out.
I do not have a stand or clamp so I wore that thing in my hat to tape Trey Anastasio last Nov.

So can someone suggest to me a clamp to buy or a stand or combo of both?
Im on a budget too and would appreciate any input.

Speaking of that, Joseph, you'll need a mic clip for it.  You could get a generic one at Guitar Center or online for a couple bucks.  I couldn't locate mine.

Hi there.  That's cool +T helping recruit another tapir.

To the future operator of this mic: plug it into LINE IN on the MD.  Then turn gain up to near maximum.  This is much better than mic in, which may tend to distort at high levels.

The mics has an excellent stereo image (choose narrow or wide) and is great because it is just "point and shoot".  No fuss at all.  You can also EQ a little bit to bring up the bass and treble, but it sounds just fine stock.

I have a Sony D8 do you also suggest for me to use line?
I am correct in thinking the mic in helps provide power?
I was given this mic, so I don't have the clip as someone posted above,
so I plan to cruise by a Guitar Center or B&H to get one.

If I use LINE IN for the D8, do I still want to concetrate on the levels peaking around 12db or whatever that black indicator dot is called? I used it once for Trey with mic in, and the levels did seem a bit off/low...

I've never used a DAT, but it should be the same.  Use line in *whenever possible*.  At best you will avoid distortion, at worst you may just get a bit cleaner signal by avoiding the preamp.  If you can get up to -12dB that is still OK, just boost it in post.  In fact, that is a safe level to shoot for, no fear of overloads.  I don't know what level the 'black indicator dot' is though.  On MD units it is at -12dB, so maybe DAT is the same.

The ECM907 mic is battery powered, so you don't need 'plug in power' from the mic socket.  Even if a mic needs plug in power, you can just use a battery box to supply the mic, then still plug into line in.
