Neumann or Schoeps for Stealthing
« on: February 09, 2006, 03:22:37 PM »
I want to upgrade to either a Neuman KM140 or Schoeps MK4
active setup to use primarily for stealth in-hat recording.

From the recordings I've heard, I prefer the Neuman/Lunatec
sound more than the Schoeps/Lunatec or Schoeps/Nbox sound,
but the Schoeps/Nbox setup sounds a lot more stealthy, since
the Neumanns still require that the active cables be
connected to the mic bodies.

My questions are:

Is there a stealthier way to use the Neumanns without the
bodies, and is there another pre option than the V3 that
will still get a good sound with a smaller size? For
example, is there such a thing as an Nbox for the AK40's?

Regarding the Schopes/Nbox setup, can anyone point me to
where I can get more information on the Nbox, like size,
cost and features?

Lastly, regarding cost, what is the approximate price
difference between the Neuman/Lunatec and Schoeps/Nbox
setups?

Is there anything else I should be considering? Like I said,
I will primarily be stealth recording. I currently use the
SP-CMC-8's with a Microtrack. I also have a D7 that I hope
to retire soon.

You can run both Neumann and Schoeps into a sonosax sx-m2-ls2 without bodies.  You may want to look into that.

As Sanjay said - SX-M2/LS or /LS2.  They both have a pair of 3-pin LEMO connectors to mate with the older Neumann cables (or just have the connectors added to the current cabling).  The /LS2 model adds a Schoeps-specific connector as well.

I've got an /LS that I'll want to sell pretty soon, but I'll be sending it in for a pot replacement and checkup first.  If that's something you might want, drop me a PM.  I don't want to sell my Schoeps cables, so this might be a good solution for us both.

I run SKM-140 on the odd occasion on MV-100 to M1.....results are very nice indeed
SKM-140 bass end is utterly massive....roll it off a little

Thanks for all the suggestions. I ended up going with the
Neumanns, but I'm still undecided on the pre/ad. I would
prefer something that does both. I really like the sound of
the V3, but I don't like the size. I think I will try out
the mic2496 first.

I would +T you all for the help and suggestions if I knew
how. Or maybe I don't have access to that feature yet...

what will you be recording onto?

if you're stealthing, it might be worth your while to maybe go with a sax and then run line in into an r1 or something.  lots of tapers find the adc in it very clean.  might be a better option then running a mic2496.  I've heard lots of people who aren't too pleased with it or have had problems with it in the past.

I'm using a microtrack, so that's why I'd like to use an
external adc. But I'm considering an sx-m2/ls to avoid
having to carry around the mic bodies. I would run it
straight into the MT, since I don't want to also carry
another piece of gear for the adc. I suppose if the MT's adc
isn't up to snuff, I could just wait for the R09...

i don't think the adc in the mt is all that bad, i haven't did any tests, but i think it gets the job done fairly well.  i bet there might even be some sax > MT tapes out there.

You're right! I made some recordings with my MBHOs into the MT recently. Of course the MT's ADC isn't in the same league as the V3's, but it's really not that bad either.

You should also consider the Schoeps CCM series, which eliminate alot of cables and or bodies and a box. Much better for stealthing, IMO. Basically, you end up with what looks like caps and cable, however the entire mic is the size of the cap.

also consider the dpa 4022 series, which is just the cap as well...no bodies

Yeah, I heard some great sounding 4022 shows, but I heard
some not so great ones too. Imho, they seem to be less
forgiving in a bad sounding room. Since, I almost
exclusively stealth, and don't always get a good location, I
decided to go with the Neumanns. I wish I could afford to go
with all the mics mentioned, as they each seem to have a
situation they are best at.
