BTW, this forum is not for stealth recording.

FWIW the original poster didn't ask any questions about how to sneak in gear, etc. - he asked for gear recs based on his budget and optimal mic placement...

I would actually setup where the D is, but its up to you and what you think is the sweet spot.  But it will be in that general area, right in the center, about halfway back from the stage...

From each PA speaker, left and right, draw a equilateral triangle (60deg angles) with the one point at the PA and the other two points projected out into the room.  You want to stand where the two triangles overlap...

At a show where there is a ton of dancing/moshing/craziness in the middle, you may have to stand off to the side and do a stack tape (not preferable, especially in cases where PA is run in stereo), or you'll have to stand in the center further back.

You could tape from one of the round tables in the back of the dance floor and run you stuff under a jacket or in your girl's purse or something...

as mics I can recommend AT 943s with hyper cards because they are super small size and have an excellent sound. My current setup includes a 3wire battery box plus CA 9100 preamp coupled with a h120 and the sound I am getting is just beautiful. Simply awesome setup. If you want to check out how it sounds you can find numerous shows from me on dimeadozen.org (newest release: Europe). I have samples included with everything so just browse through my shows and see if you like the sound.

And definetly go with cards or hypercards. It limits the crowd noise for stealthers a lot since you cannot get your mics up very high in the air.

If you want a good starter set check our Church Audio's packages, I can vouch for his quality preamps and many here recommend his mics for starting out.

here is my latest show on dime if you want to check out the samples:

Definitely go with cards, maybe hypers, but they can be very limiting sometimes.  Beware that wall of subs in front of you, and try to give your mics a little up tilt toward the stacks, as the bass could just overwhelm the higher frequencies if they are really pumping the subs.
