best cardiod mic for 300 dollars?
« on: September 06, 2007, 08:02:12 PM »
Which cardiod mics would you say is the best buy if I want them to meet these criterias;

1. I want to use the mics to an edirol R-09
2. I want to tape mainly alternative rock bands in indoor arenas and big clubs.
3. I want the mics to be fairly stealth / small
4. I prefer a clear and welldefined sound to a more bassy sound (if there has to be a trade off)
5. I want the mics in the price-range of about 300 dollars.

The mics I have in mind so far are SP CMC-8, Church audios cardiods, MM HLSC-1.  Which one of these 3 is the best? Are there more mics to concider given the pricerange?

Thanx!

Not sure if these are the "best" (best is an opinion), but I would suggest this deal:

I have the SP-CMC-8's and they just sound much too thin and a complete lack of good bass response. I am going to try the MM HLSC-1's.  Arni, a board member, sent me outdoor samples of the AT853 low sens and MM HLSC-1's and the MM's won me over.

I think the Church Cards are a great find for the price paid and may still get those just so I have plenty of options.

Hey Nick, how would you go about running the C4s with a Church STC-9000 pre and an R-09. Or rather, can you? I I have the Church cards and am very happy with them, but I'm always curious about other options. Thanks, rWc3523

common ones would be the deneke PS-2 or art phantom II.  they range in price.  but if you were gonna get a full size mic and a phantom power supply you might as well get an all in one phantom/pre like an edirol ua5 or an all in one phantom/pre/recorder like a pmd 660.  A few years back you saw a lot of people running mics>ps2>ad20>recorder.  then more and more people started picking up UA5's replacing both the phantom and gain stages.  but recently it seems like everyone I see is using the super all in one that encompasses power/pre/and recorder into one box.

hope that made sense.  I'm kinda rambling.

No, it was actually very clear. Why add another link to the chain when you can reduce the number of links with a different piece of equipment. You took care of my questions quite well, thank you! a +T for your troubles!  rWc3523 8)

makers of phantom boxes:

neumann b48i (expensive)
AKG (not sure of the model, but probably not cheap)
Denecke PS2 (killer box, $150 ?)
Art
Rolls
Core-Sounds new phantom box looks bad ass as well.

here is what sweetwater carries:  http://www.sweetwater.com/c959--Phantom_Power
and fullcompass has more:  http://www.fullcompass.com/category/Phantom-power-supplies.html

looks like the rolls and the stuart are the least expensive.

Sp-cmc4u (.atu853)...199.00, ....with the xlr/phantom power mod just under 300.00.  Then you could grab a power supply for 150-200.00 ( a ps-2)                     for the money, you really cant beat it.

Do the SP C4s fit the 'stealth' requiriment?
I've seen some pics and it looks more 'open' to me.  ???

I've said it before and I'll gladly say it again, For the $$$$ Go with Church gear.  I have pulled MANY excellent shows with my little rig and I get compliments all of the time on it. As a matter of fact, I taped what has been called by over 200 ppl the best recording of the Police tour this far with just my church mics straight into my R09 .
Because of the recommendations of a few guys on this board i picked up a used set of c4's for like $200.00 a few months back to tape my first open show. I ran c4-art phantom 2-church 9000 pre-R09 to tape umphreys and dmb and I was absolutely stunned at the quality.  You absolutely dont need to drop large sums of $$ to pull good tapes, anyone here will tell you that.
$899.00? Whats this thing made of, moon rocks and bald eagle?

Lol...no the sp-c4s are not the easiest to stealth....however, if you use them correctly the payoff is quite worth it. But i do believe they would serve the "open" technique nicely as well. They arent so much big...they are somewhat heavy and best ran with phantom power...which then adds another challenge to the stealther.
