for those of you who have studio setups for post production (and other uses), what kind(s) of monitors are you using? do you like them? recommendations under $600/pr?

yeah rast - thanks for responding. i looked thre first, but only one real thread about speakers, and they were mostly all taking about home audio passive speakers. i am generally interested in powered studio monitors.

Look at the Alesis 520 monitors. I have them for my home studio and they are wonderful for the price.

M-Audio BX8A's.....shit on relentlessly by the pro-audio community, but I think they sounds pretty nice. YMMV.

When I was shopping for a set of monitors, I tried them against similar-sized (I forget the model numbers) Yamaha and Mackie units. I found the Mackies to be too muddy, and the Yamahas to be too treble-heavy. The BX8a set sounded just right to me.

I've used BX8's quite a bit and have a set of DX4's (smaller speaker; space was an issue) that I've used for ages and think they sound great for the size and price. I don't care for some of M-Audio's products but I do like their monitors.
You might want to check out KRK, too. I've really liked the ones I've heard but have also heard some folks question their reliability and quality control. Never had them so I can't comment further but maybe someone who has could shed some light on that.

These days, though we're running Genelec 1029As and a pair of ProAc's. Love em both, but out of budget.

is Genelec industry standard in mastering and transfer studios Heath? Assuming that's your current gig of course.

15 years in the studio industry. Using Adam s3a's as mixing speakers after trying a dozen other choices. For your budget, I would get a pair of Dynaudio bm5a. Check calistro music if you arent looking used.

I'll second that. I picked up a used pair last Fall on ebay for just under $600 shipped. Think it's the best money I ever spent on taping/audio gear. So much easier to tweak a recording a bit to get it sounding great than using my stereo as monitors. Only downside would be you were into really bass heavy music - techno, rap etc. you'd probably want a sub too.

On that note, I'm totally spoiled by the Genelecs at work, so its hard to compare. But... I just got KRK RP8s at my little studio, which I think are pretty good in the sub $600 category. I've only been recording and mixing on them for a few weeks now FWIW. They seem to be pretty full in the low end category, but not messy, decently tight. But I also think they are articulate enough that if I have to do some surgical work they perform well... Don't forget, the room is really important, might be worth putting some effort in there too...

I would say that in mastering, no, Gennies are not standard. Typically those guys are running speakers WAY more expensive and they are usually loudspeakers as opposed to nearfield monitors. The Gennies are more commonly found in a tracking/mixing environment. With regard to transfer studios (like myself) it varies across the board. In the caves, we used to run B&W's that I loved in one studio and Blue Sky's in the other room. At the new place, I'm running Gennies (1031--thanks, Swampy) in Swampy's room, and I just put some ProAc Studio 100's in my room. So far I love the PRoAcs. Very clean, yet still musical (as far as my half-deaf ears can tell). Swampy says they sound nice, and he can hear like a champ ;)

I had genelecs for a long time (both the 1030 then the 1031) and I loved the sound of them but never my mixes. always felt they made everything sound good. The Dynaudios also have this problem but to a lesser degree. In my studio I now happily use adam s3a's while in the studio I freelance in, they use a pair of focals and a pair of ATC speakers in their two rooms. I could work with any of these, happily, tho if I had $600 I would get the dynaudio bm5a.
