tansfering to pc?
« on: February 26, 2005, 09:30:57 PM »
Ok, so I have my recording and would now like to attempt and transfer it to my PC.  What do I need/do?
I think I got the right cable.  Its from radio shack, audio cable.  1/8 to 1/8.  I am clueless now.  Is there freeware out there to do all of this? ???

minidisc, and I don't have any special soundcard just yet.  This is my first time, so I just want to see how it works, and then I will upgrade to a better soundcard.

As long as you have a "Line In" on your soundcard...(not Mic In)

Download a copy of Audacity...use the 1/8 cable...(hopefully you got the stereo one...it's easy to buy the mono cord by mistake)

http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

Thats it!

Make a directory(folder) for your project...

Open audacity and go File > Preferences

Audio I/O - Make sure your card is selected

Qualiity: Sample Rate : 44.1

Sample Format: 16bit

Set the others to High Quality

File Formats: Set Uncompressed Export Format to WAV 16 bit

Directories: I set this for each project...not sure if that necessary, but it keeps the temp files with the project...browse to your projects directory...you will be prompted to create a folder...then restart the program

Line out of your md - assuming a portable, about 80% of the headphone out should be a good start...play with that...

Back in Audacity - Select File > New

Click the Audacity record button - start the MD...you should see something...

I use the Windows volume control for levels - but you can control it from Audacity as well...there are two sliders...

You may need to check you soundcard settings to make sure you have Line In unmuted...

So I may need some help after its transfered for how to get it to cd or make track numbers etc.  Can I use this same software to put in the track numbers??

As long as you have the HD space - your're safe to work in CD size chunks...timewise...

When you get done...hit the stop button

Then File > Save - give it a name...

+at this point you can play with the editing, fade in, fade out...etc...remember to save changes...+

When your done editing...

File > Export as WAV

You will be prompted for a folder...

You are done in Audacity...next...

To chop it up into tracks you use this program...

yikes - one thing I left out of the setup part...you may have caught it anyway...

In the File > Preferecnces > Audio I/O

Make sure you specify "2 channel"...

You should see both channels when recording...

(The older versions of Audacity came with a default setting of "Mono"...Im a release or two behind..maybe this has changed...)
