UA5 Problem...maybe?
« on: June 04, 2008, 11:10:32 AM »
Hey,

I have switched between my h120 and JB3, both hooked up to my warm & digtital modded UA5.  I have never had a problem before, but I figured I'd ask.  When recording to my h120, the recording skips, pops, slows and speeds up.  When recording to the JB3 it pops and statics all over the place.

Could the problem be my UA5, or do I have a bad cable (which I just bought), or are the recorders bad?

Thanks

I would think it's the cable, if it was the same cable both times switch it out and retest.

I had a Monster (regular) cable I was using.  Then I switched to a Monster TXI (I think), with the same results.

Thinking just about the iRiver, have you updated the firmware recently?  I had a weird issue once with music recorded not being the correct rate/pitch.  I can't remember what caused the issue.  One of the things I did was update my firmware along with some other stuff I can't remember and it went away.

Probably because you didn't turn the iRiver on AFTER it was being sent the digital signal.  There is a known problem with incorrect wav headers being written when the iRiver is turned on before you feed it the digital signal.

The cable is a Monster THX.  I have a basic optical cable in a closet somewhere.

Are you using a toslink to miniplug adaptor?

Yes.

i think this is the meat of your issue.

to have 2 recorders fail at the same time, i would look what they have in common.  and ua-5 > cable would be the first stop on that journey.

I am also using right angle adapters at both ends.  Do I need to change these out, or just nix them all together?

Also, should I replace the mini-plug attachment?

Get rid of them altogether. Only times I ever had any problems going UA5>JB3 was when I used a TOS>mini adapter. Once I got a TOS>mini cable all my problems disappeared. If you can use a TOS>mini cable (unknown brand, straight on both ends), shoot me a PM with your mailing address.
