Title: Umbrella clamps?
Post by: colinw on June 08, 2013, 11:20:05 AM
Hi all, looking to pick up a C clamp or mount for either an umbrella or someone else to clamp on to my stand, in preparation for festival outdoor season. I see lots of talking about the windtech C clamps, and I also found this one on bhphotovideo http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/712234-REG/On_Stage_TM01_TM01_Microphone_Table.html (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/712234-REG/On_Stage_TM01_TM01_Microphone_Table.html)
Anyone ever use one?

I assume I can cut a handle off an umbrella and insert it into the hole in the clamp then tighten it up? I have never seen one set up to hold an umbrella. I guess the other option would be to use a mount like the gakbrellas?

I removed the handle from an umbrella and put it in the hole of a windtech c clamp (where the mounting bolt goes).  Had to crimp it a bit to have it fit, but works like a charm.

The one you posted the link to is the same as a windtech - go for it.  All tapers should have one in their bags - very versatile.

I use a Windtech clamp and a $5-6 wally world kids umbrella with the end handle removed.

Another option is a "chairbrella" which has a clamp, gooseneck and umbrella. The clamp and gooseneck are fairly light weight  and I wouldn't trust them in more than a light breeze. However the umbrella is rather substantial at 41" and if removed from the gooseneck the shaft will fit in the Windtech clamp with ease. Available from several retailers including Academy and waldoworld; for others a quick search should supply a retailer in your area.

Until needed to protect your mics you could always clamp the gooseneck and umbrella to your chair for shade then quickly mount it to your stand if rain appears imminent.

these On Stage clamps work well and cost about $10.  http://onstagestands.com/products/view/MY550

this one also looks promising, but i've not seen it in person (http://www.dhgate.com/5-8-inch-stud-super-c-clamp-for-studio-light/p-ff8080813b93615b013ba45efb503df2.html#s1-3-1).  the thread on the stud is only 1/4" and i'm not sure if the stud is interchangeable.  you might need another adapter to make it work.  $12.54 shipped.
