taping DMB on the Bud Light Cruise...
« on: October 13, 2009, 11:54:33 PM »
Apparently, every year, Bud Light does this big Port Paradise cruise... 2 chartered cruise ships sail to Royal Caribbean's private island where there's a private concert.  You can't buy your way on, you win your way on through Bud Light (in most cases).  This year, DMB is the featured band, and DMB gave away a handful of spots.  I was lucky enough to be one of those winners.  I'm trying to figure out if I should tape.  I still need to email DMB to find out if this show will be taper-friendly (I worry it might not be since Bud Light is running things).  I'm also worried about the logistics of taping on an island (I assume the show is on a beach-like spot), and the crowd (plenty of casual fans who are very boozed up).  The tape would be very much in demand, I'm sure, but I worry it may not be worth the the headache.  Thoughts?

If you are on a beach, prepare for a lot of wind.  Windscreens are a must.

Your instincts re the crowd, etc. are no doubt true.  If you have "backup gear" you might consider using it...

I suppose you could also consider whether not running a stand and getting up very close could work.  Tape would be worse, probably, but hassle, less.

Greg -- I emailed the WH today.  Got a reply that said "Good question.  We'll look into it."  Hopefully that won't take too long.

Thanks to all of you who said a bad tape is better than no tape.

Belexes -- I have windscreens... they aren't great... but they should help at least a little.

Scott -- You'd think it would be taper-friendly... but then again, I don't know how much "control" DMB has over this concert.  The last cruise, as far as I could tell, was organized by DMB (or MusicToday, whatever it was).  This is Bud Light's cruise.  When I won, the WH forwarded my info to Bud Light... and everything comes from them.

Steve -- The cruise is Oct. 23-26... show is on the 25th.

acidjack -- No backup gear, my one rig is it.  I don't think getting up close would work any better.

I may also look into the approach that I know some tapers have taken in the last year, and try to set up my stand inside the sbd "cage".  I think a few tapers did that at Cville...

I imagine Bud Light people have many things to worry about other than someone recording.  If I were you, I'd bring the gear and just set up at the soundboard where your stuff might be a little safer

nobody is gonna care what you do in regards to taping. DMB won't care, the cruise ship won't care and bud light will have no fucking clue what you're doing. i can guarantee you it will be a free for all on that ship.

if you're lucky enough to get on the ship, plan on taping. its a cruise ship for gods sake... there will be video and still cameras everywhere. this is one situation where you can get away with pretty much anything, anywhere.

doesn't matter. the island is like the boat. trust me... nobody will question anything. i was completely floored by what made it onto the moe.cruise 2007 and only a third of the passengers were there for moe. again, royal caribbean couldn't care less about you taping on the island. i think you need to step it up and run video too.

maybe, but at the same time, its a free giveaway cruise vacation that just happens to have DMB playing. this island probably has "cruisers" on it 5 or 6 days a week. these cruisers most certainly are carrying around video cameras on a regular basis. security for the cruise and concert entry takes place at the port (more than likely miami). i would also imagine that DMB band crew will be somewhat minimal. this isn't so much a DMB event as it is a bud light event.

I may also look into the approach that I know some tapers have taken in the last year, and try to set up my stand inside the sbd "cage".  I think a few tapers did that at Cville...

Just to clarify, only one stand was allowed "inside" the front corner of the SBD cage at the 2nd night of the Charlottesville shows in April, as a personal favor to the taper who is also a friend of Jeff Bagby. The other couple of stands were allowed to set up just outside the cage, right next to that one.

Normally, you should be able to set up directly behind the SBD area and run your stand as high as you want. My advice is to ask one of the DMB sound crew members permission to set up at the SBD, and just set up where they tell you to go.

Not true, DMB allows you to tape from any place where you are not blocking their cameras and if no one around you bitches.... typically that is not a problem, as they bitchy ones are also the 1st to ask for a copy of the show

Woman behind me at WPB in 2006 was "worried" it was going to block her view.  Then she asked how to get the tape.  Then she went on to be a "screamer" during the show.  Really frustrating...

I'm gonna attempt to set up near the cage, I think.  Should give me a slight bit of protection from the crowd...

Not disputing this, their tape-from-your-seat policy that you described is well known. I was speaking specifically of what DMB tapers have been experiencing just since last summer when TR first started touring full time.

Tapers were allowed to setup directly behind the SBD, which is also always behind the cameras as well, and run the stands way on up. I think it's worth going to the SBD area if you can't get a good spot elsewhere.

the sbd and cameras do not have the same setup all the time - fwiw
for example at spac the camera are behind the board, in cuse they were next to each other
one time they are on the sides more then the center too

generally speaking though the sbd area is a safe place to set up

So, that actually worked out a LOT better than I expected!  No trouble at port security... they wondered why we were bringing so much stuff, but that was about it.  There was a bit of a hitch the day of the show, unrelated to the taping of it.  The "Cruise Compass" schedule said the show was from 2-4.  We planned to get up early, but things didn't go as planned, and we woke up around 10:30.  We got our tickets for the tender boats, and around 11:50, went to get a quick brunch.  Five minutes after we sit down, we hear an announcement about tender boats boarding, and the DMB concert at 1 PM.  I bolted up and was ready to sprint to the room right then.  We did down a few more bites of food, then went back to get the rig.  Thankfully, there was a boat right there, and we were on the island by 12:20 or so.

I headed right for the booth, and looked for a place to set up.  I asked one of the sound guys and he suggested setting up next to a tree next to the tent, saying nobody would mess with it there, and it was dead center.  It was a nice idea, but at the height I was running, the mics would be in the tree :)  I decided to set up at the back corner of the soundboard tent.  Had things all ready to go in plenty of time.  On the boat over, I realized I left my UEs in my backpack -- thankfully, my girlfriend was able to borrow someone's earbuds so I could check levels.  Started rolling, and let it be.  (I did bring levels down a bit too much, though -- fixing that now).  Our towels were about 10 feet away, and I had no problem leaving the rig -- I could see it perfectly, and nobody was messing with it.  They were also able to walk around it -- one of the advantages of a daylight concert.  I had also attached a CNN luggage tag that I picked up when CNN sent some swag to our newsroom -- figured that couldn't hurt :)  For the first 30 mins of the show or so, I was very confident my rig was safe -- Coran Capshaw was standing right there.  Tore down at the end of the show, and that was that.  Not a bad day...

Big thanks to Crumbo for the windscreens -- huge help there.  My little ones would have been no match for the island breezes...

Once I can get GIMP to work (or use something else to shrink my photos), I'll post the link to my Rig Pictures thread.  Quite a few nice pics of my mics among palm trees, as well as some other photos that are nice.  Gotta watch what I post though, so the thread doesn't wind up in The Sewer :)
