What happened? (brickwalling? DC Offset?)
« on: July 28, 2008, 10:38:49 AM »
Took a mono sbd patch out of a local board last night. Took a 1/4" patch from an out that had a trim knob.  Kept it at about 1/2 way throughout the show. Levels were peaking on my 660 at about -6db throughout the show and everything sounded good through the phones.

When I looked at the waveform this AM I get this:

Was it brickwalling or something else? Fortunately it doesnt' sound bad!

I had a similarly asymmetrical waveform a while back; from what I was able to research and discern it may have been due to a faulty (new) battery in my battery box.  The same gear has worked fine since then; I'm curious to hear what input others have.

Look up DC offset.
Sennheiser 418s>SDMixPre-D>RO9HR
Beyer MC930>Fostex FM3>NagraSD
Couple of Schoeps CMT441 too.

Look up DC offset.

Ok, looked that up and it does seem that that might be the issue.  I see that it can be addressed in the post too.  Next question is, what caused it?  Was that from the board feed, or the deck, or is there any way of knowing?

Thanks!

I had this happen once and it looked almost just like that and that recording also sounded fine, i tried the dc offset with a couple programs and never saw a change so i eventually just left it, i never had that happen again but think it was my bb also, which since i 4.7k modded my mics no longer use because the mics straight into the pmd620 sounds great in high spl situations.

I also tried to use the DC offset tool (Audition 2.0) with no visible change in the waveform.

No audible impact on the recording, BUT it gives you a false reading of where your levels are. My deck was registering -6db but in fact I was peaking, so if I'd been pushing the levels harder I'd for sure have had distortion.  Hopefully I can pinpoint the source of the issue.  Might try some testing at home to see if I can replicate it patching out of my stereo.

Same thing happened to me like a month ago. Actually, two times: same band, same venue, same location, different gear.
First gear: HLSO-Micro (omni) > CA-9100>R-09
Second gear: HLSC-1 (card)>BB>R-09HR.

Your waverforms looks pretty much like mine. Never happened before or after. I'm going to tape the same band at the same venue in two days with HLSO-Micro>BB>R-09HR. Will see what happens  :hmmm:
