Is being short going to hurt my recordings?

I have a feeling that due to my height (5'4") I'm likely to get alot of crowd noise since often I am surrounded by tall people.

Most likely I'll be stealth so I can't put anything up on a pole.

I'm 5'5" and I have no problems. I do like to get to the front of rails if possible.

I just did a FOB from Gov't Mule, in a sea of tall people. I was way more than happy with my results.

As long as you have a direct line between your mics and the speaker stacks, it won't matter other than picking up talking, but there's nothing anyone can do about that when you're stealthing.  I'm pretty tall, so I have to admit it's nice in stealth recording situations, but I still can't eliminate background chatter.  If the stacks are up high, that will help too...or if you edge a little closer to them so there's no heads between the stacks and the mics.

If you're stealthing in a GA pit situation, you can always move around to avoid talkers. I'm 5'8'' and usually end up behind people taller than myself. The skill is in predicting who the talkers and rebel yellers are during the opening act and just relocate to avoid them before the show starts.

It is a double edge sword.  If you are tall you might get caught easier by standing out in the crowd.  If you are short you can get away with more, like checking levels and having wires hanging down the back of your hat, etc....  Being tall is definatly better for the high frenquencies...

Also, make sure that you have your mics angled upward a bit, to compensate, assuming that the stacks are above your head height.

Thanks guys.  I finally got my mics and I have and Edirol R-09 on the way.

I can't seem to get my mics to record squat with the Belkin TuneTalk Stereo and iPod.  The volume is very low with auto gain off and no existent with autogain on.

Where did you hear that?   ???  They don't ask that info...LOL!

But being short can't help.  Just get as close as you can and get directional mics (omnis may pick up too much surrounding crowd noise) that you could point directly at the stack from your hat.  As long as the music drowns out the talking, you should be just fine...but you'll want to get close...and have earplugs if you plan on standing in front of stacks for too long.   8)

Absolutely.  I recommend loading mics into croakies, mount on sunglasses, the prop the sunglasses up on your head.

I'm only 5'6'' myself and whilst my recordings arn't the best, they are certainly very good for the way I tape (still haven't got a good mic position).

Just try to make sure you have some room around you, sound will travel all over and it will not affect it drastically unless you are bunched up like sardines and the people in front are hitting your mics, lol.

I'm 5'6" and done many shows with AT831 clipped to my trusty NY Giant hat surrounded by much taller people at GA shows and gotten good results with minimal noise pollution!
