Hey all.  Well I'm working a gig for NYE.  Everyone Orchestra here in Portland. 
The venue is the Wonder Ballroom.  The board they have is one of these....

Yamaha M7CL/48

Aparently it's a digital board.  So I will most likely need an AES/EBU cable correct?
My question is can I just put an XLR>RCA adapter onto the end to go into the 744
as the 744 has the bnc>rca thingy's?  Has anyone ever patched from a digital board? 
I'm a bit scared about it but the house soundguy assured me he does a separate mix for the recording. 

Or do they make an AES with xlr>RCA?  Thanks for any input!

I've taken an AES/EBU digital patch out of a Yamaha board like that a few times.  Just make sure you're running at a matching sample/bit rate (though your 744 probably won't accept the signal unless the sample/bit rate matches the SBD's settings). 

Re: connections, you should be able to make or have someone make you a BNC<->XLR cable for an AES/EBU signal.  Busman?

Well with 4 days to go I'm not sure I could get it made.   

Wonder if an adapter will work.

It may work with an adpater, but that is beyond me.  It seems like it should as long as the cable is 75ohm.  Maybe someone else could answer that question who has experience making cables?

Hopefully he'll at least send me 24/48.

I've had to run at 24/44 or 24/96 whenever I took a digital patch from a SBD, though I'm sure that is a reflection of engineer preference.

Have you thought about skipping the digi outs for the analog outs of the separate mix? If that is an option, you may like that better. You can then still control the gain and balance of the SBD tracks yourself, and not have to bug the FOH engineer to tweek anything while he is trying to do his thing.

This is a good point too.  These Yamaha DSBDs have over a dozen XLR outputs to which any bus/mix may be sent, and it should also have wordclock out(s) in case you decide to use analog outputs yet still want to be in sync with the engineer taking a digital out.

I thought of that but wasn't sure if there would be any open areas on the board.  The EO can get pretty outa hand channel wise.  I'll most likely press for that but wanted to make sure I had a working AES before I show up just in case.  Thanks guys.

that board has 16 omni xlr outs. even with that many people you can only run so many monitor mixes so you should be able to get a pair with the recording mix bussed to them.

why not go into the 744 through it AES input and skip the adaptors?

did you also wanna use them xlr ins for mics?

i'm with charlie, if the board outputs AES on XLR definately go that route if the 744 has a digi on XLR input. (i run a korg MR1k, so no 744 in da house to look at).

if you can only get digi out on xlr and have only digi on co-ax in, most decks will accept the xlr signal in an unbalanced format (sonys most often don't like it imh_experience). s/pdif co-ax is 1v peak-peak, aes is 5v p-p.

so a cable with XLR pin 2 hot (RCA center pin) and pin 1 and 3 tied to ground (RCA shield) usually works. the CORRECT solution is to use a transformer to convert from balanced digi to unbalanced digi as the cable impedance and voltages between the two standards are different.

remember aes digi does have differences in subcode data when compared to s/pdif but should really matter in this case at all.
