New Model - Sound Devices 788T-SSD
« on: April 16, 2009, 08:40:15 AM »

I just received this email from Sound Devices:

Sound Devices is introducing a new model to its recorder lineup at NAB, the 788T-SSD. This new, premium model of the 788T replaces the 160 GB SATA hard drive with a factory-supplied, high-performance 256 GB solid-state drive. The addition of the SSD provides several important benefits including:

•vast internal storage capacity; continuous recordings of over 60 hoursof 24-bit, 8-track audio,
•increased transfer speed versus a spinning hard drive,
•increased immunity to shock and temperature extremes,
•zero acoustical output.
The 788T-SSD will be available on April 20, 2009.

Mics: Schoeps MK4 & MK41, AKG CK63 (Naiant Actives)

Preamps: Naiant KCY Littlebox

Recorders: Sound Devices 664, Sony PCM-M10

if you get sbd patches on a semi-regular basis, save for the 788.

Note that they don't claim any increase in battery life.
I guess SSD has a similar power requirement.

The only change is the addition of the SSD drives.  There is a thread on the SD froums that talks about SSD's and their plan to eventually sell adapters for the 702, 722 and 744 boxes to be able to use the SSD drives.

is there a difference between SSD and CF for say the 702?
man o man, if i had 6k to drop, i would pick it up 8channels in a heartbeat.

32 gb cf cards are $181 now, whonder what they will be in 6 mos?

I doubt you can add any type of internal drive to a 702.  As for external drives, anything that has FireWire should work.

32GB CF cards can be had for a lot less than $181.  Here is a link to some tests I did with an inexpensive CF card:

http://taperssection.com/index.php/topic,119491.0.html

When I bought the 32GB card in question, it was $60, but now it's $80.  First time I've seen a memory card go up in price over time.  But in 6 months they will probably be even less than $60.

I just saw a price for one of these: $6,495.00 from b&h.  I'm sure that is what everyone else will sell them for also.  So for an extra 500 bucks you get a 256GB SSD instead of a 160GB HDD.  Not too bad if you consider the lowest priced 256GB SSD from newegg is $480.

If the price of SSD drop over time I guess the price for the 788T-SSD will drop??

Maybe it won't maybe in the future they will just make a 1TB 788T-SSD instead and keep the price the same.

I really doubt SD will drop the price.  More likely, as you have indicated, SD will just start putting a bigger drive when SSDs get cheaper.  1 TB for what 256GB cost now in maybe 3 years?
