Advice Please
« on: February 02, 2012, 06:47:33 AM »
is worth heading down the road of buying an OK digital portable recorder (say something like the Tascam DR-05 or 07) then splashing out more on the microphones/connections?, I want to get into contact mic recording and some ambient outdoor sounds

bit confused at the mo, wonna go for the best setup for a starter

Depending on your budget, if 100 dollars is very much money in this case, I would say it could be advisable if you really need external mics (maybe even a few of them for stereo and different situations). One suggestion though is to look at the M10, a very popular choice, since it not only is of good quality but has pretty good and quiet omni mics suitable for recording ambience (although practically in mono). If an omni for ambience was on your list, then you can get the omni and good recorder in one package.

Others probably has more to say on the subject.

Depending on your budget

bingo, whats the budget. In general, the best practice is allocating most of your cash on the mics. There are instances, such as when your budget is under $300, that external mics + a cheap recorder is roughly equal to a more expensive recorder with a decent set of internal/attached mics.
"This is a common practice we have on the bus; debating facts that we could easily find through printed material. It's like, how far is it today? I think it's four hours, and someone else comes in at 11 hours, and well, then we'll... just... talk about it..." - Jeb Puryear

Budget is in the region of £200 ($320), not that fussed about internal mics, more interested in external mic setups.
