Post by: Chuck on November 05, 2003, 01:29:01 PM
I might have a line on an inexpensive AD1k. I need advice.

pros: detail, smooth sound, great imaging, preamp (if you need one)

cons: 12v SLA, size, heat (they literally "cook" themselves to death), realiabilty (word clock #1 problem), preamp (could be better).

I'm already running a 12v SLA. I've heard of the heat issues. How serious is the heat thing really? Can they be ventalated?

hot enough I never felt comfortable running it in a closed up bag (ie. fob/stealth).

It gets pretty hot, almost to the touch.  While many will say the pre is crap, I liked it well enough with my mbho's.  I did have a revision C with the upgraded pres though.  If less that 600, I still think it is a steal!  Any idea on what you would run in front of it?

i would hesitate to run my ad500e in bag, after about 45 minutes it gets warm, but will a 20 minute setbreak, it cools right back down to room temp, i love the sound and all the cons outway the pro's in the audio department in my book, my 12v doesnt ever get hot though

I've got Josephson/MBHO's and modded Octava's for microphones.

I run mine zipped up in the bladder pocket of a camelbak bag and haven't had a problem with heat.  It gets warm, but nothing to be concerned about.  Haven't run this setup outside in bama during the summer, though.

Prices will now free-fall.  Pick up 2 if you can find them.  What a shame - an end of an era.  "Vintage Digital" - working units could eventually cost a premium.
