I KNOW this has been answered on here but my search through the stickies and SEARCH didn't seem to turn it up. So sorry for the simple question:
When running M/S, you should position the "Side" mic so that the "front" of the side mic points LEFT, correct?

The "side" mic is a Figure-8, so yeah, you point it Left-Right, or 90^ to the stage/"mid" caridioid mic. As for "front" to the left, I'm not sure it makes a difference... I have a feeling it does not...

M = Mid ~ Mono ~ Left ~ Channel 1
S = Side ~ Stereo ~ Right ~ Channel 2
Front (0 degrees) of 8 always points Left ~ the Origin "In the beginning there was only one channel" :)

If you accidentaly run it the incorrect way with the front of the figure-8 Side mic pointing right instead of left, simply invert the polarity of the resulting Side signal before doing the M/S decoding, which is the same as pointing the mic the opposite way. The M/S stereo decoding will work fine even if you don't do that, except the resulting output will be swapped Left/Right. So alternately you could swap left & right channels after the M/S stage.. or leave it as is and see if anyone else even notices.

Googling says front of the MS to the left, in most cases, so that it is in-phase with the Front...
So you were correct the first time around...

My word of advice from when I had one:
1) Mark the "front" of each capsule housing.
2) unless he's labeling them now, mark which set of controls go with which channel.
That was the root of most of my problems. I thought it functioned particularly well in a blumlein setup if you can get the right environment to run that.

Yes, this is correct.
And important to do it this way - although it's easy to fix if you do it the other way round, it can cause head-scratching.

Page, what exactly do you mean by this? Each capsule has 3 patterns/HPF/-10db Pad, and the top capsule turns :)

correct, but mine wasn't labeled which set of controls went with which cap (they both sat just below the grill work, just one was on one side and the other on the reverse, I mean, the "front" wasn't even labeled). It's not like there was a "channel 1, channel 2" labeling or stacked on top of each other. It's been a couple of years when I baught the one I had so maybe he's labeling them now or using a different housing cut out, but if not, then you should sit down and mark it.

On the Peluso P-stereo one is pattern switch is marked 'A' and the other 'B' but I can never remember which capsule is which and always need to tap the grill to ID channels.

I see myself doing that alot. Its just a good think there uis that much grill space so we can see inside to the mic capsules :)
