DPA 4061 mic cable covering coming off
« on: February 04, 2009, 02:33:11 AM »
Hey everyone,

I just pulled my mics out for the first time in a long time and had totally forgotten the state they were in. My 4061s are rigged together into a miniplug. The left mic cable is starting to lose some of its covering. I can see a few centimeters of bare silver wire. I also see another crack elsewhere on the covering but no visible wire. I have heard that this could be potentially disastrous for the left cap. I tested the mics and both sides work fine currently. I just don't want to take them out to tape and have the left mic go dead on me. Is there any relatively easy to fix patch up the mic cable so that the silver wire doesn't start to fray and short out? Will I need to send them in to be fixed or is there something I can buy to fix it up? Would tightly wound electric tape work? I don't care about the appearance as long as I don't lose the use of the mic.

I unfortunately do not have a digital camera so I can't post pictures. Hopefully my problem makes sense.  :-\

maybe some shrink wrap? Electrical tape also sounds good. But if anything I would try and get that repaired.

There was another crack in the covering that the previous owner used shrink wrap to fix. I don't know how I'd be able to go about covering such a large crack with shrink wrap though or how safe that would be. I've got plenty of electrical tape though. I suppose I should send them in for repairs but I have no clue how much something like that would cost. If it ends up costing more than just buying a new pair of Church omnis I'd probably just buy the Church mics.

Does anybody else have any tips I could use?

Yeah send them to me I can fix them for $20 or re-cable them for $100. But I only recommend re-cabling if its absolutely necessary.
