Recommended T-Bar / mounts for Beyer 9xx series?
« on: January 26, 2010, 11:13:50 PM »
Curious what 930 and related model users are using for mounts these days; I assume something basic like a couple Shure donuts into an AKG or other basic T-Bar does the trick, but let me know if you have other ideas.... Asking about the full-size mics, not the detachable cap version.
Mics: Schoeps MK4V, MK41V, MK5, MK22> CMC6, KCY 250/5, KC5, NBob; MBHO MBP603/KA200N, AT 3031, DPA 4061 w/ d:vice, Naiant X-X, AT 853c, shotgun, Nak300
Pres/Power: Aerco MP2, tinybox v2  [KCY], CA-UBB
Decks: Sound Devices MixPre 6, Zoom F8, M10, D50

The mount I would use is the Rycote Inv-7 and the S-series XLR tail yo help decouple the cable (the price of this tail has been reduced by half from the 1st Feb.  In the UK down from £30 to £15 - the Inv-7 is £30).

For a stereo bar you can use the one of your choice from the cheap but good K&M to the expensive but superb Grace SpaceBar.

I hope this helps.

Regardless of what shock mount you get, don't neglect the cable you attach to the mic.  Using a stiff cable will negate just about all the isolation you gain from the shockmount.  The Rycote S-series tails work fine, but are kinda hard to find.  You can roll your own by using a section of thin flexible cable such as is used for lav mics or the inner cables from a snake.  Some assembly is required.

Awesome. David said you were like The Wolf in Pulp Fiction. Shows up just in time with tons of gear, does a pro job, and disappears into the night! :-)

I just use the standard MC930 shockmount

I use those for my 480's.  I like 'em.

Very similar to the Beyer mount, I use the Avant SSM for all my sd mics - Beyer, Berliner and Naks.

Agreed

The Rycote S-series tails work fine, but are kinda hard to find.

I have not found that - most dealers in the UK can easily supply them, or you can order direct from Rycote.

Agreed - a good alternative.

I usually use these w/ 930's:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/298919-REG/WindTech_SP_20_SP_20_Microhone_Shockmount.html#features

There's a spot-on review there from a fellow taper and he correctly points out that these mounts don't give a huge amount of vibration isolation but are nice and lo-pro.  Though they're a tad bit tighter than I'd like, but better too tight than too loose IMO.
