Beyerdynamic MC950 (supercardiod) Sample
« on: February 26, 2010, 10:52:10 AM »
I know a few folks had asked about this, so I thought I'd post a link to a show I recorded with my new Beyerdynamic MC950s.  Pretty ideal recording spot, with a balcony clamp next to the SBD (i.e., the SBD is on the balcony).  Mics at about DIN running into the R-44 (no mod) directly, no pads, no rolloff.  No EQ or other post work done other than mixdown and some compression on spiky parts of the SBD.

You can download the MP3s (which are VBR 0 HQ quality) as a ZIP, and there is a sample MP3 posted directly on the page.

I do note of course that this is a matrix mix, so it's again not a perfect situation for comparison, but as the SBD mix was mostly drums and vox, you can get a good idea of what they can do anyway.

I guess I would say the jury is still out on these puppies, especially as I haven't yet tried them in what I think is an ideal situation.  I don't think they sound as detailed as my DPAs, but I have to keep telling myself that they cost 1/3 or less of the price and have a different pattern.  Anyway, I should limit editorial comments as it's not like I have used tons of other fullsize SDC hypers/supers that I can compare them to.

I will be running them again this Sunday with them and the DPAs 4-track into the R-44.  This particular venue is, I think, ideal for these mics, especially as I haven't been entirely thrilled with how my usual spot sounds with cards.  Depending how it comes out I may mix the two sources, or just use one or the other, but either way I'll post the raw 950 pull here for those who are interested.

Debating also whether to put my littlebox in front of them and see how that sounds.  From my earlier post it sounds like that using a pre without adjustable input gain I might need to use the -15dB pads, and it's kind of a PITA to put a pre in front of the R-44 for me, especially when already running 4 mics, but who knows...

I am. Just looking for a single track. Thanks.

Thanks.  I've been in the market for hypers, and I already own the MC930's.  I've been hoping to hear these mics.

Have you used the MC930's to compare?  I find them very detailed, I just don't use regular cardioids much.
