Topic: Stack Taping with 414s...

Going to try to stack tape in a venue (Brooklyn Bowl in Brooklyn, NY) that is always a challenge no matter where you are due to the crappy placement options, extremely chatty crowds, etc. Bottom line is I've liked the stack tapes I have heard from there by other tapers better than stuff from further back.

The stack is pretty big, and pretty wide, and the spot is CLOSE - maybe 10ft at most.

I have the 414s, which have every pattern.  My initial thought is to run them omni, but if I do, is there any benefit to running a normal wide omni split like 3ft? 

I'd also thought of placing a second pair further down on the stand so I could capture different sections of the stack, the theory being it might avoid missing any frequencies due to the placement of the mics.  For that I guess I'd use the 4021s X/Y - but would there be any benefit to ORTF?  Assume not as there is no stereo image to be had anyway....

By stereo mic'ing, you'll get more of a feel of width and spaciousness in the recording if not a technically accurate left/right stereo 'image'.  Since you're simply aiming for that stereo feel over an acurate image, you could run the 414's A-B spaced vertically on the same stand if that is more convenient or if it is more likely to get a balanced timbre given the radiation pattern of the drivers in the PA stack.

Stereo reproduction is an illusion. You are OZ.

^^^ So the 3ft split (same stand; but I have a big ol' Bogen split bar I can use) might actually give the sense of spaciousness even if it's not really there... that does make sense.

On a related note, I also considered wide card mode to get less of the crowd behind the mics, but I figured since the omni has a wider pattern on all axes (i.e., vertical as well as horizontal) the omni would pick up more of what I needed....

I say run them M-S with the Subcard as the M. That way you can dial in the S in post to give you enough of the space but not too much of the chatter/bad sound.
