Title: TinyBox Question
Post by: Datfly on March 10, 2015, 09:13:31 PM
My original Tinybox (doesn't that always sound weird to say or write?) is simple as has a Hi/Med/Low gain switch and a simple On/Off switch.

However my new Tinybox has the same Hi/Med/Low gain switch but it also has a Hi/Low On/Off switch? I don't understand it and I don't understand Jon's expalination so I need someone to please explain this to me in the simplest terms. The dummy version if you will.

Here is Jon's answers in bold to help as they mean nothing to me.

I have a question about my Tinybox that arrived safely today.
On the Tinybox I have now I have two lines in and one is DIR & the other is TRAFO and a ON/OFF switch.
On the new TB it only has one line in that I "assume" is tranfo only but the ON/OFF switch has a  HIGH/LOW switch ?? What does that do?
Also what version is this Tinybox called so I can properly list it when sharing concerts?

The power switch selects between low and high voltage (either for polarization or phantom).  Version is 2.5.

Thanks for the info but I need just a tad more info as I do not fully understand the above.
I am running NBob cables with Schoeps caps into a M10 recorder.
What one do I use and what position is what? Is up Polarization or vice versa?
Will it hurt my set up if I accidently use the wrong one?

Polarization  is 54V on high (normal sensitivity) and 16V on low (-10dB pad).

Up is 54v for running actives w/o bodies. Down is for 16v phantom or acts as a -10db pad. Use in the up position with your active cables. Use in the down position if you were wanting to add a -10db pad. You will not hurt anything by using the down position but your recordings will be 10 db less than what they should.

Funny, I had this same email conversation with Jon after ordering my latest tinybox (v2.5) a few months ago and felt exactly the same way.

I don't know why a -10dB pad is a source of such confusion when a C480 body has the same feature:

Um, Ok. I Schoeps actives only never dealt with AKG so again this means nothing to me.

The source of confusion came from the fact that rather than just straight up answer a qustion so the average non-engineer could understand, you would needlessly make it more complicated.

I would think that if you have your Tinybox on LOW gain and you are still clipping the Tinybox you would want to use the -10db setting to lower the signal 10db to prevent clipping, just like running an attenuator cable.

I understand what a pad / attenuation is I just need a clearer explanation as to their positions and to completely answer my questions.
You piece mealed out vague one liners. Cobiwan explanation was all I needed.
I love your work and the TB is awesome as I assume are most of your products but maybe you need a PR guy?

At least now I know I'm not the only one too stupid to understand Jon's explanation. ;D  Thanks for the simple version (or maybe that should "simpleton" version :D) Cobiwan!

How did Jon's original answers not fully answer your questions in the first place?  The way I'm reading your exchange, he gave you exactly the information you asked for - no more, no less.

I am sure many here may have fully understood Jon's brief answers however I did not and simply asked for more info.
Cobiwan explained it so I could understand it.

Bazinga!

Nope.  You're not even using that reference correctly.  I also stand by my original comment, which I will confess was written in annoyance that the OP was IMO being rather rude in their assessment of Jon's explanations.  Clearly I'm in the minority given the responses on this thread and Jon can certainly speak for himself, so I'll just show myself out now.

I stand corrected.  I got my zings confused... shoulda just said "Zinnnnng"  or kept my trap  shut.
What I  was responding to was Jon's opinion that the OP was apparently in possession of more money than taping knowledge.

Oh, I thought you were zinging Datfly's response to me - now things make more sense.  I do appreciate a good Bazinga though...

I was in a bad mood when I wrote that, and I think I still am, so . . . if I ever do another box again, I promise it will have no features at all and cost $500.

Sounds like you have a future in the audiophile accessories market!
