Right now I'm running a modified AD-20 which powers my at933s with battery power. However, I'm very tempted to get a new preamp, and I'm looking at the M-Audio Firewire 410. The thing is, that pre only provides phantom power (like most other preamps out there) and I don't have a battery box.
I've seen this discussion before, but I never found a solid answer. Can the SP models of the at933s be powered by 48v phantom power? Has anyone actually *tried* it?

I have never tried it myself but I don't think they can take 48v. My AT ES943s take 9v. I'm thinking 48v wuold fry their asses.

See I've heard the opposite (and that phantom power and battery power are pretty different), but I was wondering if anyone had tried it...

I have heard folks have hooked up their 853 based SP mics to 48v phantom and they here the mics crackle...definitely not a good sign...I believe I heard in the past that someone asked Chris at Sound Pros and he said that they were not wired to accept anything higher than 9 volts...

yes you can, but you'll need the AT Phantom Power adaptors. the model # is AT8533 9-52V Phantom Power Module.
