Title: Need Recs on a 42" LCD TV
Post by: thegreatgumbino on September 08, 2007, 07:26:35 PM
I'm in the market for a new 42" tv.  I don't follow the trends for this stuff in the least, but it seems from some quick reading that an LCD with ATSC is a must.  My limited experience tells me me to go with Sharp, Samsung, or Sony.  Any one have any ideas?  Obviously, looking for the best picture quality.  Thanks.

If you're really looking for the best picture quality, you'll need to look at plasmas.  The Panasonics are definitely the best in their price range and have stellar picture quality.

If you have your heart set on LCD and are willing to put up with the picture quality trade-offs, I like the Sharp Aquos 42D62U.

The Sharp caught my eye after reading some good reviews.  I guess I spec'd LCD, but I don't really care.  Looking for something in the < $1,500 range.

Pioneer Elites are the creme de la creme of displays, but they'll be a bit out of your $1500 range. ;)  The Panasonic TH42PC77U is only $1399 at Costco - that'd be my pick if I was buying right now.

I'm sure others will chime in with opinions, though. ;)

How about a Sharp 42D64U (new model - 1080p - slimmer cabinet) for $1000 including free shipping?

Or the 46D64U (46") for $1300.  52" is $1800.  65" is $4k.  The 46" and 52" are also available in the 82U series (120Hz refresh rate) at a $100 premium.

I just ordered a 46D64U myself.  Can't wait!

PM for the hookup... friends&family deal direct from SharpUSA.

The previous code expired.  If anyone needs a new one, PM me.  Our Sharp connection can get new codes as they get used up.  This deal ends very soon

I have a 42" Pioneer (not Elite) plasma and a 37" inch Sharp Aquos LCD. I'm pleased with both. I prefer the plasma. However, the plasma is less forgiving if your room has a good amount of sunlight. I've always heard great things about Panasonic's plasmas. Also, plasmas can get screen "burn in" just like a computer monitor. I think you'll be happy with either plasma or LCD. I love HD on a good TV.

FWIW...I purchased both at Costco and would do so again.

Oh yeah, the new Panny's have an anti-glare coating on them that is supposed to be awesome.  A friend of mine has one but doesn't have a sunny room, so I couldn't tell exactly how well it works.  But from what I've seen online it's supposed to be a *great* improvement!

I will second the Panny plasmas.  Our viewing room has lots of sunlight and there is are no glare issues.  Much better picture than the LCDs I looked at.  If you are getting TX HD/digital cable the tuner is not necessary IMHO.

The plasma burn-in issues have been mitigated with technology improvements and running a anti-burn-in/conditioning DVD

What's the difference between the 42D64U and the 42D72U?

i love my philips 42PFL7422D; the 42PFL7432D has the ambilight, but costs a bit more. i bought it @ costco for $1500. best picture, to my eyes, of any set on the floor. independently verified by mrs macdaddy, fwiw. we are very happy. i still look at other lcd sets all the time, and for a 42" 1080p lcd, the only ones i have seen that rival/better my philips set (in the picture quality dept.) are the new aquos (120hz) sets, and those are more than twice of what i paid for the philips set...

avs thread discussing the set here (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=842732)...
