i'm getting my father a new dvd player for christmas. what he has now is a POS toshiba, so anything will be better. i just want to make sure i don't get him another POS.
any suggestions? maybe up to the 150 range

It might be a bit too late but I really like the Pioneer DV-563a, it will play pretty much anything you throw at it and it sounds good and has a sharp picture.

i doubt my father will notice anything, though. as long as it works, he should be happy :)

I've read the transport is a bit noisy, but if your dad isn't an audiophile he probably won't notice it. :)
And as an aside thank you Scott for all your work on DVD-Audiofile, I downloaded it a couple days ago and I've been burning DVDs like crazy. It's so nice to have entire shows on one disc.

sure does. I love this thing. even has a compact flash reader on the front panel.

FWIW I've heard the 588 is a little noisy.
We have had a Pioneer DV 525? for a while and it has a noisy fan. I was aware of that when I bought it (Spring 2000) but it was one of the only ones at the time that handled CD-R/RW AND had a coaxial output in my price range ($250ish) I used it primarily to do CD>CD using my HHb CDR850.
