Title: 4960 croaks after about a year
Post by: BCostigan on January 14, 2006, 01:11:12 PM
Well after about a year my 4960 gave up the ghost the other day.  It fails to recognize any disks I give it....DVD, CD, CD-R, etc.  The thing sounded so nice too.....makes my 3960 sound awful.  I bought it knowing it was kind of a throw away but wish I would have gotten more than a year out of it.  :-\

So what's the new latest greatest universal player? :P

Have you tried one of those lens cleaner disks?  My 3960 was having trouble reading until I cleaned the lens.

I was looking through the Crutchfield catalog today and they have the 3980 for $49.99 and the 4980 for $99.99.  They also have a Sony NS50P for $79.99.  I can't tell you how any of them sound, but they are cheap.  Denon is much higher quality and much more $$$.

I think about 3-4 people here have the pioneer, Brian.

A couple reccomended it to me when I was looking.

Not bad price-wise either.

I'm looking for a Denon 2910, myself.

I love the sound of my Harman-Kardon DVD-31,  BUT  no SACD, and  it is a dog with burned DVD-As that requires some video to menu right and will output 5.1 digital on some 2.0 Stereo-only DVD-As unless a CD is played first.
The A/D and omps sounds pretty sweet and warm, however and the picture is A-1 when running DVD-V.
So, recapping, if you don't care about digout or SACD, and quirky isn't a major complaint, it's hard to find better.     ;)

I sold the Tosh 4960 within five days of buying it.

I'll throw in my support for either the elite dv-45 or the denon.

I borrowed a dv45 for several weeks and it was awesome.  I have a denon 2900 and it has been stellar.  Never used either for video, just audio playback.

You may also want to look at the Onkyo DV-CP802.   A very nice, relatively low cost piece.  Plays everything and has nice built in DACs.
