Last night I was recording a jazz ensemble, and the acoustic bass player suggested I take a direct feed from his amp, rather than putting a mic
in front of his bass. I did this once before, with the same bassist and amp, but with an Edirol R44 rather than my new Tascam.
Well, I got no sound from the amp, even after changing the attenuation switch next to the input. Is there some kind of menu setting to accomplish a direct amp feed, or a feed from any other external source, for that matter?

If he has a DI output, usually you will get a good hot signal. I suspect it was something simple, like plugged into the wrong place, he has to turn up a knob, something like that.

I may be wrong, but I suspect the issue is on my end, because the same thing happened several weeks ago, trying to take a direct feed from a different bass player's amp.

What type of output?
Guitar's, etc have Hi-Z (High Impedance outputs) and you may need a high-z to low z adapter - in order to get audible levels - and probably turning on the Pre-Amp will be required as well.
I believe the R-44 works with both (as evident with the 1/4"/XLR combo jacks it has) - I do not remember reading in the manual of the hs-p82 if it excepts Hi-Z inputs but seem to remember it not being listed as an option.

It was a normal XLR output on the amp, which is what's confusing me. The HS-P82 has switches next to each input for 0, -25, or line level, and it didn't work in either setting. Time to look at the manual, I suppose.

Did you turn the channel off mute?
