don't look at the hd-p2 unless you want to be stuck only using 8gb CF cards...
that's my big gripe about it mainly..

How many times is this an issue other than a festival?  Plus cards are cheaper and cheaper these days.  Love my P2.  Let your ears help you decide.

I agree... even if you record @ 24/96 (I do 24/48) that's still 4 hours per card
how many shows do you  go to, even with the opener exceed that?

I bought a warm mod 661 for this purpose, and have been pretty happy, plus you have a little stealthy box for those few times a year, or for a side-stage run.  good kuck!

I do roll at 96/24 and I do a lot of festivals. I have recorded a
few bands that I actually ran out of time and had to switch cards
while they were playing still. Although that is pretty rare to be honest.
What isn't rare for me though is to record bands that play 2 plus sets that
last for 3 to 4 hours.
So; yea if you record bands that do their little 90 minute set than it wouldn't
be an issue at all.

This is not about letting your ears decide it is about technical specs to me.
Plus as the title states "bit bucket" they won't be using the p2 as an AIO..

to add; yes cards are pretty darn cheap but managing 6 plus cards after a long day
of festivities just adds more error to the element of things..
On the pro side of it, less chance of losing a days worth of recordings if something happens to your 16/32 gb card.. You only lose the 8 gbs instead heh :P

If the r09 could also be a bit-bucket, this thread would be answered and over.  A mod to bypass the a/d stage of the r09 and store the raw digital values would be quite popular... but it isn't easy.

Some of the solutions proposed in this thread are f'n huge physically.  The 671 is a bit of a beast, especially if you are already carrying a minime.

I knew that f'n BUILT-IN battery would be a weak point on the microcrapper.  Planned obsolescence.  Thanks M-Audio!

They must've learned a thing or two from Apple.  :P

Good point!   I am not an apple fan boy but the ipod form factor won't allow any other conventional battery solution and there are no consumer batteries in a suitable form factor.  I've been Very happy with my ipod (nano) bat life.

Recording devices should support the concept of an 8 hour show, and that means being able to change batteries.

The mt should have taken AA or AAA bats. That's part of what makes the r09 so great... cheap batteries, and they last a Long time.  Though I can appreciate that m-audio economized on the design and didn't have room for anything but a flat poly battery.

Just think... If the microcrapper had a switched power jack like many devices, the internal battery could be bypassed when running on external power and this would be a non-issue.  They might have been able to provide a firmware option to bypass the internal battery.

And I have heard the recordings Skaggs makes with his rig.  Nice work, bud.

But I have the R-09HR and have been totally satisfied with using the line-in and internal A/D on that deck.  And that's after using a V3>bit bucket quite a while.  I second the notion put forth above that an external A/D isn't particularly necessary these days.  YMMV, of course.

On the other hand, less gear means less blinking lights in the bag.
Now you see it:  ADK 51TL,  or MK4/41>KC5>CMC6, or AT4051b/4049a > Wendt X2 > R-09HR
Now you don't:   CA-14c  or DPA4061 > CA ST-9100 > R-09HR
