Archos Jukebox??
« on: May 09, 2005, 08:50:14 PM »
I'm looking to get into taping, so pardon my noobie jargon...

I've been searching ebay for a deal on a JB3 (because, as I've read, that's the way to go) and I ran into something called an Archos Jukebox.  They're going for DIRT cheap (under $100) and seem pretty good.  I have no idea what to look for, so if this is obviously a piece of crap, I pardon wasting your time.  Thanks for any help!

It does record, but not in WAV format. I guess Rockbox has a firmware upgrade for it, but I am not sure if it fixes that problem. Just try to get a JB3 or one of the new recorders that are coming out.

Here is the Rockbox link:

It is for the Gmini 120, but I guess they have the same flaws. Hope that helps.

Thank you very much for your help!  It seems as if the JB3 is worth the extra cash.

I've done a good bit of recording with the Archos Gmini 400 and I've yet to discover a flaw in the recorded wav files. I am aware that there were problems with older units. Have you actually tried out the Gmini 400 yourself? I regularly use it as a field recorder with an external preamp, and it has worked reliably. I use it to record classical concerts in very quiet settings, and neither Wavelab nor my ears have noticed any problems with the wav files.

I too have run the Gmini400 for more than a handful of shows now.  I have yet to notice any problems with the wav files or the playback of the recordings.

you can find gmini shows on archive.org - listen to a few and see if you can hear artifacts ( I couldn't...)
