DV-RA1000 Users--Special Edition of DiscWelder Available...
« on: October 08, 2005, 10:42:54 AM »
...and it's apparently FREE to registered DV-RA1000 users. Anyone get it yet?

Saw it here:

http://aes.harmony-central.com/119AES/Content/Tascam/PR/DV-RA1000-DiskWelder.html

TASCAM, in conjunction with Minnetonka Audio Software, is introducing an exclusive version of the DiscWelder software to create a complete mixdown and mastering solution for home and professional studios. DiskWelder Bronze 1000, available for free to all registered DV-RA1000 owners, adds three useful audio mastering features for use with high-resolution recordings. First, the software allows conversion from Direct Stream Digital (DSD) audio to a PCM WAVE file that can be imported into any DAW software. Second, the software allows users to burn a DVD-Audio disc with up to 192kHz/24-bit stereo mixes. DiscWelder additionally includes a Disc Mirroring feature that allows the disc to be played in any DVD player --not just those set up for DVD-A playback.

Best regards,

Bob

+T, Moke, for the TASCAM link. I was just about to send TASCAM Customer Service a note asking how to get it.

I'll be interested to see how (well) it works for the DSD conversion to PCM.

Glad to be here!

this is really great news and opens up many possibilities, now with direct DSD->PCM decimation, we can create/archive multichannel DSD mixed though workclock sync and then convert them to 24/96 5.1 mixes, totally sweet!!

peace, chris

p.s. - now I have to order a few more recorders =)

Moke,

Yes, I jumped in & got mine the Tuesday after Labor Day--after reading all the posts here! Sweet piece of gear.

Chris,

Yeah, I'm wanting another one, too! Not in the budget, however. Hey, your AKG for the front & my kunstkopf for the surrounds...might be worth a try.

All,

I guess I'm really not senior enough here to have given Moke a +T...sorry. But I think he deserved it!
Best regards,

Bob

This is fantastic news! Exactly what I have been hoping for without paying big bucks for the program. It won't author SACD but this is the next best thing. This should perform DSD decimation as good as any PCM recorder on the market.

My understanding of the SACD format is that specialized equipment is needed to create the master disc, which is why I think it is having a problem taking off. It sounds great (seems mostly available for classicial recordings only), but so do DVD-A discs and we can do those at home.

Has anyone else been able to find out about this "special addition"?  I'd called Tascam and Minnetonka and enither had any useful information.

Offer good in the United States only. Watch this space for information on how you can get your own copy of the software.  :flack:

Isn't SACD pretty much a dead format?  Unless you have a SACD player that doesn't play DVD-A, I have no hangups with DVD-A.

I've read a bunch on both, in what I've read I couldn't pick up on what the advantages of SACD would be.  I might have became lost in all the technical mumbo-jumbo, is there any advantage SACD has over DVD-A?

yes, i think so.

and the dsd > sacd is really the way to go, and is the way i would like to go, ultimately.

sacd is not a dead format. i see it as being a niche market for audiophiles, which is fine, but we have to be able to make our own discs...

another t in 12 for setting me up in this conversation ;)

sacd is native to dsd at 2.82mhz/1bit. DVD-A is native to pcm.
This software is taking is resampling from dsd 2.82mhz/1bit to pcm format.

exactly.

I'm waiting too.

Anyone up for contacting Tascam about this? I'm not even in the US so they would probably not even answer the phone from me.

It's been on their website for months now with no updates.

I'd be more excited by this offer, if in waiting for it, I hadn't already transfered everything over to pcm via an analog step.

Ditto that, but one thing I still need is DVD-A software, so it'd still be nice.

Hi Folks,

A Minnetonka Audio rep indicated to me in an email this week that they are "getting very close to launching discWelder BRONZE 1000."

Hopefully we'll see something soon.

Thanks, Teddy. Yes, I've downloaded it.

What I need is software to convert/decimate the TASCAM's native Direct Stream Digital DSDIFF files to PCM at my choice of sample rate & bit depth. I don't think the app you linked to does this...or does it?

discWelder Bronze 1000 is supposed to be free to DV-RA1000 owners...so I don't feel like dropping 30 c-notes for discWelder Chrome.

Thanks again!

Yeah, Moke, I noticed that when I launched Firefox today (...the dWB1k page is one of my homepages...can you tell I'm anxious?).

Also, tascamcontractor.com looks like it is in the midst of update.

Let's hope...I look forward to not having to run all these performances via analog into my Masterlink just to edit & burn a CD.

Teddy, thanks again.

at what point is this false advertising?
they sell the unit with this as an added bonus feature, yet don't make it available.

I waited on hold last week for an hour to hear, "We have no idea, call Minnetonka Software..."  I haven't had the time out of work to call them yet.

Even though it sounds great, I've abandoned the DSD for the most part and have been recording in 24/48 or 24/96, I really like the D/A in this unit.  I've still recorded a few things recently in DSD, but only if I was running another recorder as backup.

Ha, Chrome II lists for about 30 c-notes, correct?

I understand they hope to "ship" by NAB...which is in a couple days.

Perhaps they still have some bugs to work out?

Like most of you I'm getting pretty impatient concerning this version of Diskwelder, so I e-mailed Minnetonka yesterday and this is the response I got:

Hello Joe,

How do you like your TASCAM DV-RA1000?

I apologize for the delay.  Sometimes software takes longer that you think
or want.  You never know until you know, you know?

Anyway - we are very very very close to release.

The PC version is locked down and the Mac version is Beta 2.

Are you a PC or Mac guy?

Steve Clarke
Minnetonka Audio Software.

So it sounds like it will be sooner than later, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

It's up:

http://www.tascam.com/Products/dvra1000_dwb1k.html

My new Dell Core Duo laptop takes about 20 hours (!) to decimate to 24/96 PCM & burn a DVD-A. Much faster if you are going to 48kHz fs, though. Sounds great. Even the CDs are remarkably good--much better than what I was getting going through analog into my Masterlink with its onboard converters.

Some items of interest:

You'll need your serial number from the back of the TASCAM to register your software. I printed mine with a label maker & placed it on the top of the unit for quick reference.

I have not been able to burn a gapless CD.

There is an audible tick within the first 5 ms of every track (which I don't notice in DSD playback through the DVRA-1000). I've started using the MARK command between movements of classical stuff  instead of splitting tracks while recording.

I haven't been able to burn a DVD-A without ticks at the track transitions. Of course, my track transitions are not exactly at zero-crossings in both channels, so for now I'm attributing it to that and not the software.

The software converts each stereo DSD track into a Left WAV (0) and a Right WAV (1) and stores these WAVs in a cache folder on the hard drive. During editing I bounce these to a new stereo track panned hard left and right.

The software will accept only stereo DSD or PCM files. I haven't been able to pull in the decimated left & right files later--only the stereo DSD original, or a stereo WAV bounced from the original left & right PCM files in Audition.

Even "overs" are showing up about 5dB or so down from 0 when converted to PCM. I haven't done a scientific level check here...I'll leave that up to you.

 ;D

Interested in hearing others' experiences.

so you burn a dsd data dvd-r on the fly in the tascam...

then you have to copy those files to your harddrive...

then you have to process/reburn these files onto another dvd-r, this time making a 24/96 dvd-a..?

and there still is no way to use those dsd files to  burn an sacd..?

so the only way to listen to the sraight dsd is through the machine..?

Moke, drop me a note if you want to discuss further. I've been working with this for awhile now.
Best regards,
