Reusing(soldering) XLRs Question
« on: July 12, 2004, 01:52:57 PM »
I searched around, but didn't find an answer.

I have some cables that I never use and would like to hack off the XLR ends and build some new cables from them. Do you have to get all of the old solder off the pins, if so, how exactly?

Just trying to be a little frugal. :)

cut the connectors off, skin back some fresh cable, then wire strip the 2 conductors. then, tin them, and resolder all 3 (+,-, and grd.) to the connectors. check for continuity. you are done. should take all of 10 minutes, tops.

I've always just heated up the connector and pulled the old wire out and proceed as usual.  I'm not sure if you're "supposed" to get the old solder out (seen somthing called a solder puller?...maybe that's what that's for?) but I've never had a problem just heating the old solder and "reusing".  YMMV

an easy way to get solder out of weird places like xlr's in to heat it up and just fling it, snapping your wrist, and that momentum should just take most of the solder out, you dont wanna solder OVER a cold connection, cause you wont be getting a great connection and most likely wont get continuity!!

thios isnt a tape folks, these can be reused if done right :)

hey bean, i use the fling method for the sake of fun.  it makes funny little splotches on the table top when it cools. :)
