Title: Looking for Record Album Storage
Post by: herrmann2burn on February 08, 2008, 05:48:16 PM
Dont know if this is the right forum, but i figured Home Theatre is a good place to start.  :)
Any advice on getting something to Store LP's in?
Unfortunately we have taken the old milk crate solution, but we want something that is more efficient and protective, and aesthetically pleasing. We probably have about 100 or some albums.
Also looking for something with a cover or lid, so our cats wont sit on the exposed LP's  :-\

Thanks,
Rhys

edit: I did find this http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160206762262&indexURL=5&photoDisplayType=2#ebayphotohosting (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160206762262&indexURL=5&photoDisplayType=2#ebayphotohosting) on ebay.  ;D Too bad i dont have enough room for all of our posters, let alone these things.  That chick has got some rockin LP's though!

Ikea, Expedit Bookcase.  It has no doors but the cats won't be able to sit on them.  $80, holds tons of LPs.

Aren't you in the NYC area?  (I think I met you at a Greyboy Allstars show at the Nokia last year.)

Somebody told me about Gothic Cabinet Craft, but I haven't checked out their products first-hand.  Apparently they have many locations throughout the area.

Thanks guys for the replies.
Frank- yep we are in NJ.  My wife actually found that site and we've been looking at the http://gothiccabinetcraft.reachlocal.net/record-cabinet-rack-p-636.html?cPath=2_28
We are gonna check it out at the store in JC probably on friday.
We are gonna hit up Ikea also to check out those bookcases.  Gonna decide on friday one or the other.

I use a rack made by  www.tonyswoodshop.com  You simply buy a base, and a top and then add cubes as you accumulate records.  I'm not going to sit here and say that they're the best racks out there for vinyl, but they are modular, you don't have to take your records out if you're going to move them, and they're hand made by a man in his home out of real wood, not in a factory somewhere out of pieces and parts or press/particle board.   Just my .02

+T that is exactly what I have been looking for. Small, modular but not cheap looking

We purchased the Ikea Expedit this weekend, and it is a perfect solution for what we were looking for.  We've got our albums on the bottom shelves and some cd books in the top, which we've had to store in our second BR b/c we didnt have the room for them before now.  Also have the reciever and record player on top.
If someone is lookin for a cost effective way, look into this. It was $85.  :)
Thanks to everyone in the thread for your input. +t's all round.

Good choice! My dad uses this for his record storage as well. However, his is busting at the seems, and he has more records to file away too!

So is the expedit sturdy enough to use standing up? I'd hate to come home and find that it gave out under the weight of several hundred lp's

I have one & it is awesome, mine is the larger one though with a little more storage. Well built for what it is & very sturdy.

I've always used mine horizontal, i'd be interested to know about standing.  I would imagine it's fine, maybe anchored to a wall might be a good idea.
