I think that out of all the suggestions I've seen here
OFOTD has the best idea

if you like the AKG sound you probably won't like Studio projects
with $1200 to spend you should go with the FR2-LE (modded or not)
and with the 391s you will be right in your price range

both have good resale value here in the Yard Sale if you want to change later

good luck with your new hobby
QFT.
Great job with the suggestions.
I dug the AKG sound and went with those and a busman 660 mod.
Happy as can be.

That is one of the best 16bit tapes money can buy right there!

Basically got that setup right here:
http://taperssection.com/index.php/topic,105414.0.html
and
http://taperssection.com/index.php/topic,106071.0.html

for a total of $1025, if you're considering sticking with 16 bit.

Busman Mics > FR-2LE (stock).  I started taping just a few months ago with this setup and am happy with it so far.  Here are some samples.  Two with card caps and one with hypers.

http://www.archive.org/details/bridge2008-06-20.BSC1-K1.flac    (cards, indoors)

http://www.archive.org/details/ddbb2008-06-13.flac16    (cards, outdoors)

http://www.archive.org/details/plf2008-06-17.BSC1-K3.flac  (hypers, outdoors)

Hope this helps.

So..I assume you are planning on mostly,if not totally, open taping?

Or some open,some stealth?

My suggestion would be to put together a nice stealth setup and just use it open when you can. If you go with a full-on open rig chances are you're gonna have real problems stealthing it.

If you put together a good stealth rig it will make recordings that sound just as good as an open rig and you'll have the ability to run it in non-open situations.
That's very nice when you're recording a taper-friendly band in a "no-taping" venue...which happens a lot. -something to think about.

You could get quite a bad ass stealth rig for $1000-$1200.

Then for open taping you'd just need a stand, mounts and cables. Which you could buy later when you know you'll be needing them.

I've since talked to Chris about picking up the BSC1's, and am finalizing the purchase once the funds roll over into my Paypal acct.  So I'm looking phor an unmodded FR2LE, or one that's been Busman T-modded if the price is tempting.  Let me know if you can help.  Once I get these two items I'll be on the search for everything else (stands, cables, etc., etc.).  The rig will be open (the venues I frequent allow taping); I'll probably get some Church gear if I'm looking to stealth, but the time hasn't come for that yet.

Thanks for your help everybody.  I wouldn't have any idea where to begin if it weren't for you kind folk.  I'll keep you guys & gals updated.

Well, I suppose since I've pretty much committed to picking up the BSC1's and the Fostex FR2LE, I can start looking into the rest of the rig.  So, to anyone who has a similar setup... what stands, mounts, cables, batteries, and CF cards to you recommend?

I have this rig, but my box is out to Chris for the T-mod.  Shock mounts and t bar come with the mics.  I like my HiHo silver cables and got them in the yard for about $100.  I use this for my batteries:

http://www.thomasdistributingshop.com/-LA-CROSSE-TECHNOLOGY-BC-900-Charger-LCD-8-Sanyo-Eneloop_p_186-1048.html

That'll only give you about 4 hours using phantom power, so if you need more juice, you'd have to move to an rc type battery.

CF card I use is an A-data "speedy" 8 gig card.  No issues recording 24/48.  Newegg usually has the best deals on memory cards.

Hope that helps.  It's a very nice rig. Enjoy.

Flash card I've been using with mine:

You'll get 1 hour per gb at 24/48 so the bigger card is nice just in case

Here are a couple of battery options.  I went with the second option, a little more expensive but the batteries last longer
How long do the batteries last?
I'll already have these:
•   Tenergy Universal Smart Charger
•   Two Tenergy 3800 mAh 7.2v batteries

Do you know if the Tenergy Uni Smart Charger will charge the batteries you linked to (second, more expensive ones)?  If so, they sell those batteries w/o the charger, yes?  As mentioned in another thread, looking for 12 hours of runtime.  Thanks for all your help.  It's appreciated.  Maybe too appreciated.  :hmmm:

sorry, I know nothing about batteries or the Fostex but welcome aboard the Bus :D

sometimes they get deep inside a jam and there is no such thing as up or down, just a momentary endless floating in perfect space

That is one fine, fine rig.  You will pull some very clean recordings.

I f***ing hope so!  Next venture... trying not to look like a complete dork setting up for the first time at a show...  (or get caught reading the FR2LE manual during setup).  ^_^
