Trading Shows Is A PITA...Opinions/Suggestions Solicited
« on: February 18, 2009, 02:50:42 PM »
I have a huge music collection, but I stopped trading my list years ago when bittorrent got popular opting to seed instead.  It's mainly because I find trading with other people to such a huge PITA...others take this shit WAY too serious and I just don't care anymore.

I recently honored a trade request with someone mainly because the other person asked me to trade with them and they wanted LOTS of Phish with little effort.  After offering to do a hard drive swap, he insisted on doing a DVD trade.

I told him I'd do a B&P but he insisted on me trading...sigh...WTF, trying to be a nice guy...so I sifted through his list.

I ended up making him something like 54 DVDs worth of Phish.  I got 28 or so DVDs in return...and blanks to make up the difference.

When he got my DVDs, he bitched because he'd sent higher quality DVDs.

To compensate, I told him to send me a harddrive.  He sent me a 150GB harddrive, so I filled that with more Phish.

But he forgot to send me $$ to send the harddrive back, so I paid to mail it back to him.

This morning I get a message making waves that he's gonna start bitching that some of the burns of the DVDs aren't reading on his machine.

Honestly, I'm completely tired of this guy.

FWIW, I already offered to put the missing shows on the HD if he sends it to me and pays return shipping.

What would you guys do?  Should I re-do the bad burns?

I generally don't trade with people I don't know.  B&P only or I send you a link to a torrent.  I can't be bothered.  Too many ass hats that complain about everything.

Forget it.  You've done more than I would have.  You filled up a hard drive and paid to ship it back.  That more than covers you.

You have reminded me why I don't trade.

Steve, you are way nicer than I am. I have have stopped giving out my information at shows unless they blocked for me or bought me a beer. Too many yahoos wanting something for nothing. Don't think I am going to seed shows anymore unless it is a direct request by another taper. Even at that, I am going to post it on private tracker. Maybe I will change my mind one day when I get bored and have the time to seed.

total PITA.  I told somone I'd hook them up with a B&P of DVDs full of Phish FLACS.  He wanted years worth.  10-12 days after agreeing I got a "what's the hold up" message from him.  Days later, "can I get an update on what's up with those discs"

Um, you'll get your discs when I get around to it.  I'm hooking YOU up.

Argh.  No more.

Maybe just don't trade with Phish fans.... ;D

Seriously though, I don't trade as much as I used to either, most people have the same stuff I do because they got it from a BT site just like I did. :D  I sure do appreciate the tapers who hook me up with their masters through B&P, or whatever  8), for bands like ABB, or the guys who send me stuff to seed for them.

I only trade with personal friends who don't have unlimited bandwidth to download a torrent.  I will occasionally give out my info at a show if someone asks for it, most of the time I never hear from them anyway.  In the rare case I do a trade or B+P, I limit how much they can get, only trade in FLAC for audio, and verify all the discs before I mail them.  In your case, the verification alone would have taken a week.  In this case, I think you have done more than enough.

Yeah, I don't trade anymore, not enough time.  All this stuff is avialable on etree or Archive, no need to send media anymore.

Tell the guy to buy a new DVD player/burner and it will read your discs.

Thanks Ryan.  I actually verified all the discs...but they were of course checked on my machine.  I think the problem is that he's getting discs he's not able to read in his machine.  I don't think they're bad burns...just some discs are not readable on his end.  He's taking them to work to see if he can get another computer to read the discs that his machine wouldn't.

LOL.  Remember, I'm the guy that had 2 1/2 years in Slovenia (I'm home now for good yay!).  Believe me, burning this many DVDs wasn't a big deal.  It beat the hell out of whatever else I could have been doing.

Seriously, you went out of your way to accommodate him, screw him.  The last big trade I did was years ago with Sarah Baucco and we did something like a 120 CDR trade and it was smooth sailing.

I don't trade anymore either.  Haven't updated a public trade list
in about 5 years.  When it got to be more of a job than a hobby,
I stopped.  I used to do 50-100 cdr disc trades with a few guys
that were across the pond and got some good stuff in return.

'bout the only audio cds I burn anymore are for the owner and/or
soundman at the local club and of course some bands that have
allowed me to record.

I never really had a bad trade except one time where I mixed up what I was supposed to send 1 guy and sent him a bunch of SCI he had no interest in that were supposed to go in for another trade. Then I couldnt find one of the shows I was had that was really the crown jewl of the trade (sbd of TOO from Fiddlers Green I think). I was emabrased and made up for it by giving the guy another spindle of shows, but I totally blew that one. I got DSL right after that and havent traded since.

I do miss checking the mail these days though. My best mail days (sans tix arriving) are days where my netflix comes. Not the same as seeing the bubble mailer and wondering what was inside.

I'm retired from trading too, started to be too much work without the enjoyment it once was.
Bit Torrent really changed everything for me.
Got most of my trading partners/taping friends to join the Dime and now i seed instead of mail. So do they.

There are a few exceptions like a couple of old dinosaur tapers i know (that don't have computers)
and copies sent to the bands i record. I still don't mind doing a b/p for Allman's etc once in a while.
It's a relief not having to maintain a list anymore.

I quit CDr trades a long time ago when I ended up getting a lot of discs converted from mp3s :angry3: As for DVDs, receiving a show converted from Divx put the end to that!
Pretty much torrents only now, unless you can hook up with someone who doesn't mp3/divx! But like others, it seems too much effort ripping/burning/testing/packaging/queuing @ PO.

Ed, maybe you're like me...you're up to date as of a couple years ago...have every intention of someday sitting around and updating it again for posterity's sake...never will.

Actaully, I did include all of my commercial stuff in my list along with photos of my shelves and cases of CDs and DVDs purchased over the years in case I ever need to make an insurance claim, although that reminds me that I keep wanting to call my insurance guy to ask if I need to put my music collection in as a rider on our homeowners policy since it the most valuable thing I own.  So, I THINK I have reason to keep this portion of the list updated.

I limit trades to about 10 shows.  Period.  If it goes well, we'll do more.  Most of my trade request want audio disks, which I basically refuse to do.  OK, sometimes I relent.  I do remember when I was just starting out trading.

I still trade via mail.  There is still something special about getting a bubble mailer in the mail.  I've never turned down a trade and still search etree for new trades.  Most of what I listen to isn't "open taping".

I still enjoy snail mail enormously.

3 or 4 packages a week are despatched containing shows for bands, other UK tapers, or the rare trade or freebie.

B&Ps always accepted - my limit is generally four discs. My website list is not updated often but my likes are heavy rock/classic rock/glam rock and occasional indie/folk artists, so this is what I tape.

I receive maybe one package every couple of weeks in return. Suits me fine as I spend most of my "trading" time working on my own recordings.

This story is exactly why we built the Texas Tapers website.

Now at shows when someone asks for a copy I just give them the web address.   Takes me all of 3 seconds and i'm done.

People don't want to work to find a show anymore.  They just want someone to give it to them.  Fuck em.

The etree FAQ takes all of 5 minutes to read. 5 more to download software.  In the time they spend bitching about DVD quality or time taken they could already be downloading their own shows.

word.  I don't have the time for trading any more.  I barely have enough time to listen to the recordings i've already made.

I hate trading.  And I'm really bad at it.
No matter how hard I try, it always seems to take me months to send out discs.
Some of you know this firsthand.   ;)

I don't trade, but will al;most always do a bnp :)
Seriously, the band makes the music. Tapers just point mics in the right direction and hit "record".

That's good to hear!  The last patcher I had complained about my AKGs, fluffed schoeps for about 15 minutes, stayed patched in, and farted on me all night long.

I probably wouldn't do any re-burns.  Curious, did you get anything decent in the return trade?

For me, if I'm interested in something from someone, my first request is a possibility to DL somewhere, then B&P.  I offer up a list to trade for that one thing I'm looking for, but it usually ends up as B&P anyway (or just a freebie).

I'm always willing to do B&P for folks, and I decline trades requested by others precisely because of all the BS you are dealing with.  B&Ps are great as the ball is in the requester's court (sometimes the requesting party doesn't get off his lazy ass to put the package together, so nothing lost), it's their discs you will be using (so they can't bitch), and mostly because usually the requests are for things I haven't listened to in a while, so I get a little enjoyment revisiting a particular disc while verifying the quality of the burn ;D

I'm worse than many of you.  Not only do I not trade, I won't even answer trade requests.  I got tired of being burned, tired of assholes, tired of being flamed because I wouldn't do a b&p or trade...you name.  People are so incredibly ungrateful.  Fug-eht-a-bat'em.  The ONLY people of done ANYTHING for, is folks on this site, and a few select folks in the Norcal scene (or artists).

I will honor the first 1 or 2 B&P requests made at a show for that show, although usually I'll tell the person to send me CDs with music on them instead of blanks.  I've gotten some good music (and some bad...) that way.  But that's pretty much it.

I did one trade a little while ago with someone on this board.  I will trade with people on the board, or someone from back in the day and that's about it.  I've had a few people email over the last couple years, and if they only want a specfic show, or a couple, I usually just get an address and send them.  I don't have the desire to look through lists.  Everyone I sent out free stuff to has been grateful, so I'll still do it until I get my first asswipe.

I've fill many BnP requests for folks that just can't figure out how to d/l and burn their own. I don't mind spreading the joy at all, but nowadays it's just for certain friends.

The thing I do mind is when you write up clear, easy to follow instructions for the BnP, and people don't follow it.  Like send an SASE, but you get cash to cover postage, and no return envelope. I can deal w/ reusing the envelope, but cash means I gotta go to the post office.  Then you get crap blanks, sometimes all beat up and won't burn...

I do find myself doing one or two snail mail trades a year, usually with old school or european traders, and usually for material thats verbotten to be traded electronically in public forums, like HotTuna

I'll also help out friends who are big music fans and enjoy live music, but cant download/flac/burn to save themselves

There are definatly some self centered people out there, but the majority of people I have met at shows and spun tapes/discs for over the past 25 years have been very pleasent and gracious. I enjoy spreading the music and making others happy with it .....getting a live show in the mail is like christmas (or a holiday in general);D

I just had a guy ask for trade and i agreed to do a B&P, only to find out when the B&P arrived it was from overseas without return postage or envelope, the only reason i agreed was i can just pop it back into the mailbox, now i have to fill out a little green customs form(i think i will mark it goods and worth 200.00 >:D) and go stand in line at the post office, he did agree to paypal postage but still a  PAIN IN THE ASS especially since really the only time i can get there to wait in line i will be with my 5 and 1 year old, i told him i will get to it but it is way on the backburner and i would have never done it had that been disclosed.

I usually send a few dollars in US money to cover postage, because living outside of the US (in Canada) it is not possible for me to put return postage on the envelope.  Something to consider for both the sender and receiver of a B&P.

The last time I did this was at the ABB in Hershey last summer. The guy behind me asked if he could get a copy and proceeded to bribe me with buds. I told him I do not partake in the sacrement, so he gave me a folded up piece of paper with his address.

I pulled out the paper when I got home and there was a $20 in there ;D

So I spun him the discs, bought the postage and put the change back in there with the discs when I sent them

When I get a gaggle of people wanting discs after a show, I designate the most reponsible looking one as the contact and have everyone else work through him/her

I look at it as karma points, I need all I can get these days

But to keep on topic, if you thought trading discs/hds was bad, cassettes with low levels or DATs that wouldnt play or had massive dropouts were a real disappointment back in the day

Tonedeaf, you have done more than anyone could expect.
If I were you, I would tell him to get lost.

There are lots of nice traders, but he isen't one of them, that's for sure.

i still do ocasional B&P's for a show or 2, 3 or 4 times a year.
it really depends on what they want.
if they are asking me for a phish show they are SOL,
you ask me for something harder to find or something I taped,
i can find the time-

Back in the day, when I was a fanatical SRV trader, I'd do cassette trades for the same show over and over in hopes of getting a lower gen.  I'd get it in my head that I wanted a copy of such and such as show (maybe because it was especially good sounding) in the lowest possible gen.  Then I'd get a list that showed it as being low gens, so I'd trade for it only to find out that it sounded worse than the version that I already had.
